Scouting Creighton (8-6-2, 2-3-2 BE)
Facing a pair of must wins during the road trip to New Jersey/New York, the Bluejays delivered on the first task by posting a 1-0 win at Seton Hall on Thursday.
Senior defender Jaylin Bosak drove home the game-winner by lofting into the box on a
corner play, then heading home the lone goal of the game. It was Bosak's third goal of the season. Creighton's leaders on offense are freshman Skylar Heinrich and sophomore Ansley Atkinson. Heinrich is among the BIG EAST leaders with 22 points on 10 goals and two assists, while Atkinson leads the Bluejays with six assists.
Defensively Creighton has split time in the net between redshirt freshman Keelan Terrell (0-2-1) and sophomore Katie Sullivan (2-1-1) in conference play. Sullivan was in the net during Creighton's victory at Seton Hall, she has all four of the Bluejays' shutouts this season.
Scouting St. John's (5-11-0, 2-5-0 BE)
Down 3-1 on the road with just 30 minutes remaining on Thursday evening, the Red Storm had a gut check moment. Ian Stone's team answered the bell with two goals in a 12-minute span to force overtime, then punched in the game-winner just 25 seconds into the extra session.
Zsani Kajan delivered a hat trick in the win, scoring her first goal on a penalty kick, but punching in a pair of additional unassisted goals later in the contest. Kajan leads St. John's with nine of the Red Storm's 14 goals on the season. Five of Kajan's tallies have come in BIG EAST play. Â
After splitting time in goal for much of the season, the Red Storm appeared to have settled on Meredith Reinhardt in the net during BIG EAST play. That, however, may have changed as Reinhardt was lifted after allowing the third goal to Villanova. The final 24:32 of scoreless ball was authored by Naya Lipkens. On the season Lipkens has a pair of shutouts and a 1.48 GAA in 11 matches, while Reinhardt has one shutout and a 2.12 GAA in nine matches.
Path to the BIG EAST Championship
Entering play on Sunday, the Bluejays sit in eighth place with eight points and the Red Storm are just a step back with six points.
Just five points separate the conference leader Xavier (15 points) from a three-team tie for fifth place at 10 points (Villanova, Providence and Marquette).
The meeting with St. John's has become an elimination contest. A win for either team will likely vault the Bluejays or Red Storm into a grouping of teams battling for the final two spots in the BIG EAST Tournament. A loss or a tie, meanwhile, will push a team to the outside of that mix. Creighton's final match of the season will be on Oct. 31st at Morrison Stadium against Villanova.
