Katie Allen places second to lead CU
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's golf team won the Creighton Classic for the first time, rallying on the final day to post a four-shot victory over Northern Iowa.
Creighton trailed UNI by three shots entering Tuesday's final round but battled pleasant but windy conditions to shoot a 311 for a 617 aggregate to beat the Panthers (303-318=621) for the team title. Drake took third place with a 630 total after shooting the best round of the day, a 308. Bellevue placed fourth with a 657 total, eight shots ahead of Nebraska-Omaha. The tournament featured five teams and 36 competitors.
Sophomore Katie Allen led Creighton with her fifth straight top-11 finish to place second overall. She followed up Monday's 74 with a second-round 76 for a 150 total, one shot behind individual champion Hannah Bermel. Drake's Kristen Giles shot Tuesday's best round (74) and tied for third place with the first-round leader, Emily Snelling of Northern Iowa, who shot a 79. Both women tallied a 151 overall score.
Creighton sophomore Amelia Lee took fifth place with a 156 total after a 77 on Tuesday. Her round was highlighted by the lone eagle of the tournament, which came on the par-4 10th hole.
Bluejay freshman Gabby Tremblay (79-78=157) took sixth place with a 157 total, and classmate Claire Orcutt followed up her 79 with an 80 on Tuesday to tie for eighth place.
Tying for 14th place was CU junior Margaret Hickey, who had a 163 total after loops of 74 and 89.
Also competing as an individual were Bluejay sophomore Kristin Goertz and senior Delany Benson. Goertz (80-87=167) tied for 20th place, and Benson (91-87=178) took 32nd. Benson birdied the 15th hole in each of her rounds.
Northern Iowa's Hannah Bermel won medalist honors by one shot with circuits of 74 and 75 for a 149 total. She had four birdies in Tuesday's final round. The Oak Hills Country Club course played to a par 73 layout that measured 5,952 yards.
Creighton will return to the course in the spring.
