Volleyball Extends Winning Streak With Sweep of St. John's

Zimmerman Leads the Way with 13 Kills as Bluejays hit .356 in Sweep
Omaha, Neb. -- Hitting .356 as a team, including close to .500 in the final set, the No. 9 Creighton Volleyball team swept St. John's on Friday, Nov. 1st.
Set scores for the match were 25-22, 25-12, 25-22.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 18-3 on the season and 11-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm fell to 14-10 overall and 6-5 in conference action.
Creighton raced out to early leads in each of the first two sets, claiming a 9-4 edge in the opening frame and a 14-3 in set number two. Knotted at 3-3 in the opening set, back-to-back kills from freshman Keeley Davis ignited a 6-1 run. Creighton's surge continued as the Bluejays forced St. John's in a pair of hitting errors to make it 7-3. Following a blip in the road, the Bluejays used a service error by the Red Storm and another St. John's hitting error to claim a 9-4 advantage. Creighton went on to hold a 14-6 lead and won the opening set 25-22.
The Bluejays continued to impose their will early in the second set, scoring the first three points and surging out to a 14-3 lead highlighted by a pair of 5-0 runs. Creighton's most complete set of the evening saw the Bluejays force St. John's into seven hitting errors and a -.057 hitting percentage. Meanwhile the Bluejay offense delivered 15 kills and committed just three errors to post a .375 mark.
The most competitive set of the match came in the third frame. St. John's took its first lead of the match at 3-2 and held a 15-12 edge midway through the set. Jaela Zimmerman rallied her troops with a kill, then a pair of tough serves to bring Creighton back to a 15-15 tie. The two teams battled back and forth through ties at each of the next eight points, setting the stage for a decisive finish at 22-22 on a critical kill from Zimmerman. The Bluejays took a 23-22 edge with a block by Erica Kostalec and Megan Ballenger, then forced a Red Storm hitting error to bring the contest to a match point. The Bluejays quickly took advantage with a cross court kill by Kostalec to close out the match.
Zimmerman led Creighton with 13 kills in the match, while Kostelac and Davis each contributed nine kills. St. John's got a match-high 13 kills from Efrosini Alexakou, but the next highest hitter had just six kills.
Creighton returns to the court on Sunday, Nov. 3 as the Bluejays host Seton Hall at 1:00 pm.
