Women's Basketball Takes to the Road to Face Drake Saturday Night

Omaha, Neb. -- Following consecutive wins over Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State to open the season, the Creighton women's basketball team travels to former MVC rival Drake on Saturday night.

Series with Drake: Creighton Trails 40-27
Creighton trails the overall series with the Bulldogs, 40-27. Creighton holds a slight 6-4 edge in the last 10 games, including a thrilling four-overtime win for the Bluejays in the 2017-18 season in Des Moines, Iowa. The former Valley foes have played each season since Creighton left the MVC, as both teams have split the in six battles, 3-3. Creighton is 13-14 against Drake in Omaha. Â

Drake opened the season with a pair of wins taking down South Dakota State (74-67) and Iowa State (86-81) at home, before falling to South Dakota 102-94 in an overtime thriller on the road.
Senior Sara Rhine has been the spark to the Bulldogs offense with 23.7 ppg. Rhine is shooting a impressive 31-of-43 (72.1 percent) from the field through the first three games. Four other Bulldogs are averaging in double-figures; sophomore Kierra Collier (15.7 ppg.), senior Becca Hittner (12.7 ppg.), junior Maddie Monahan (11.3 ppg.) and senior Brenni Rose (10.3 ppg.)
Shooting just under 50% from the field (95-of-195, 48.7%), the spark for Drake this season has been its offense (84.7 ppg.) A weak area for the Bulldogs in the first three games has been defense, allowing 83.3 ppg.

After opening the season with a win at UNO, the Bluejays had a strong performance in the home opener against South Dakota State on Nov. 12. The Bluejays out-rebounded the Jackrabbits 39-34, with the help of 13 offensive rebounds to secure a 61-48 win over the Jackrabbits.
Senior Jaylyn Agnew (18.5 ppg) and junior Temi Carda (19.0 ppg) have both been impressive throughout the first two contest. Carda has posted 25 and 13 point showings and is shooting exactly 50% (11-of-22) from the floor, while Agnew posted 23 and 14 point outings.
Creighton shot 35.1% from the field against South Dakota State (20-of-57), heating up in the second half, shooting 9-of-15 (60 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the third quarter to take over the lead in the win over South Dakota State.
The Difference is DEFENSE
After ranking 222nd of 349 teams last season in scoring defense, the Bluejays are getting stops in the first two games. Creighton has allowed just 102 points in two contests, the seventh lowest in school history.

Bachelor's Impactful on Defensive End
Freshman Carly Bachelor made an immediate impact in her second game as a Bluejay. The Kansas native secured eight rebounds and a pair of blocks in the Bluejays' win over South Dakota State on Nov. 12.
Bachelor's eight rebounds are the most rebounds for a freshman in one of the first two games of the season since Sarah Nelson had 10 rebounds against North Carolina State on Nov. 13, 2010.
Bachelor's two blocks are also the most by a freshman in the second game of the year since current teammate Tatum Rembao did so against South Dakota on Nov. 14, 2017.
Bluejays Looking for First 3-0 under Flanery
Creighton's 2-0 start in 2019-20 marks the first time the Bluejays have claimed its first two contests since 2015-16. Creighton has opened a year 2-0 five times under head coach Jim Flanery. The Bluejays have never opened a season under Flanery, 3-0. The last time a Creighton squad opened a season with three consecutive victories was under Connie Yori in 1992-93. It has been accomplished three times in program history (1984-85 & 1986-87 and 1992-93).
