Hotalling and Quigley lead the Bluejays in season finale
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Both Creighton cross country teams placed 26th at the NCAA Midwest Regional, which was contested on Friday afternoon at OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla.
The Creighton women were 26th of 33 teams, finishing with 714 points to beat schools such as DePaul, Drake and Oklahoma among others. Illinois won the meet with 108 points, just ahead of Tulsa (123). The top five individual finishers were juniors, paced by Iowa State's Cailie Logue (20:20.6). Logue beat Oklahoma State's Taylor Somers (20:28.0) by nearly eight seconds to the tape in the 6K race.
Danielle Hotalling placed 67th place with a time of 22:10.1. It's the 12th time in as many meets as a Bluejay that she's been Creighton's top finisher. She improved on her 115th place effort in last year's Regional meet by nearly 50 spots.
Juniors Caroline Pass (148th; 23:19.6) and Katie Fukushima (163rd; 23:31.3) were CU's next two finishers, with sophomore Marguerite Hendrickson (176th; 23:42.9) and senior Haley Fye (182nd; 23:56.2) rounding out the Bluejay scorers. The women's race featured 235 entrants.
The CU men were led by sophomore John Quigley, who took 107th place with a time of 33:02.9 on the 10K course. That places him 19th all-time on the Bluejay best list at the 10K distance.
Freshman Danny Bohnemann placed 141st in his first Regional competition, crossing the finish line in a time of 33:51.7. Junior Max Wehrle (155th; 34:08.1), freshman Micah Navarro (172nd; 34:42.2) and senior Nick Monkemeyer (178th; 34:55.2) rounded out the Bluejay contributors.
Tulsa won the 27-team competition with 37 points, just ahead of Iowa State (54). Creighton's 715 team total was 30 behind 26th-place Illinois-Chicago, and 110 points ahead of 27th-place Southeast Missouri State. Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat was the fastest runner in the 197-man field with a clocking of 30:38.3, four seconds ahead of Missouri's Thomas George (30:42.5).
The finishes for both Creighton teams were improvements over the same meet in 2018, when the CU men took 28th and the women were 31st.
The meet ends the season for both Bluejay squads.
