Tough Shooting Night Spoils Women's Basketball's Trip to Drake in 63-53 Loss

Des Moines, Iowa -- Shooting just 29% from the field (20-of-68), the Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 63-53 loss to Drake on Saturday, Nov. 16th.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-1 on the season, while Drake moved to 3-1 overall.
The Bluejays knocked down the first trey of the game to take a 3-0 lead, but Drake answered with an 11-0 run to hold an 11-3 edge with 3:36 remaining in the opening quarter. During the stretch the Bluejays went 1-for-12 (8.3%). Creighton responded with eight consecutive points to knot the game 11-11 as freshman Mykel Parham connected from the paint, then senior Olivia Elger knocked down back-to-back shots from beyond the arc. Drake closed the quarter with a 9-3 advantage as the Bluejays went into the second quarter down 20-14.
Creighton opened the second period with an 11-0 run of its own, to take a 25-20 edge. Sophomore Chloe Dworak got the Bluejays going with back-to-back trifecta to tie the game at 20-20. An interior bucket from sophomore Gracey Griglione gave Creighton the lead at 22-20, then senior Jaylyn Agnew capped the run with the Bluejays' seventh three pointer of the opening half (4:44). Drake, however, closed the half with eight straight points to take a 28-25 lead into the locker room.
Down seven early in the third quarter (37-30) with 6:53 left, the Bluejays clawed back into the game with a 15-footer from Parham and a pair of free throws by junior Temi Carda to make it 37-34 (5:35). Moments later freshman Carly Bachelor scored in the paint and was fouled, stepping to the line with a chance to tie the game (3:50). The free thrown bounced off the back iron and Drake responded with six points of the own. The Bulldogs went on to carry a 47-39 lead into the final quarter.Â
Drake extended its lead to as much as 14 points (57-43 with 4:32 remaining) in the fourth, but Creighton mounted a final surge to get back within single digits via a trey from Dworak and a short jumper from sophomore Payton Brotzki to make it 57-48 (3:11). That was as close as the Bluejays got in the closing moments, falling 63-53.
Elger led Creighton with 15 points in the game, while Carda finished with seven points and seven rebounds. Drake got a game-high 16 points from Sara Rhine, while Brenni Rose and Becca Hitner each delivered 15 points for the Bulldogs.
Creighton returns to the court on Monday, Nov. 18 as the Bluejays host North Dakota State at 6:00 pm.
