Bluejays still tied for first in BIG EAST with five matches to play
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The No. 9 Creighton Volleyball team had its 31-match win streak in BIG EAST regular-season play snapped with a 3-0 loss at Villanova on Friday, November 8. The setback was CU's first against a BIG EAST foe since a three-set loss at Villanova on November 17, 2017.
Scores of Friday's match were 25-22, 25-16, 25-20.
Jaela Zimmerman led the CU offense with 15 kills, one shy of her career-high, while Brittany Witt had 26 digs. Creighton had 39 kills and 22 attack errors in 127 swings to hit .134 for the match. CU also added 50 digs, six aces and one block.
Kathleen Johnson hit .667 and led Villanova with 13 kills in 18 swings, and Regan Lough provided 20 digs. The Wildcats had 39 kills, four aces, 58 digs and seven blocks while hitting .333 as a team.
"Hats off to Villanova," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "I thought they played a great game. They were really low error and we were high error. I thought they outworked us tonight."
Creighton (19-4, 12-1 BIG EAST) played from behind most of the night. The Jays trailed 10-6 in the first set and fell behind 7-1 in the second stanza, never regaining the lead in either frame. The Bluejays owned an early 4-1 advantage early in the third set, but the Wildcats rallied to take their first lead at 15-14. Villanova (19-6, 10-3 BIG EAST) ended the match on a 12-6 run to earn a much-needed resume-building win for its NCAA Tournament hopes, as its unofficial RPI jumped from 60 to 49 with the victory.
Creighton looks to regroup on Saturday at 4 p.m. Central when it travels to Georgetown.
