WICHITA, Kan. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 50 Wichita State on Friday afternoon at the Genesis Health Club in Wichita.
The Bluejays moved their overall record to 7-8, while the Shockers improved to 12-9. Wichita State ranked No. 50 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Top 50 Rankings, released on Tuesday.
Mac Mease earned Creighton's lone victory with a straight-sets win at the No. 5 singles position. Mease won 6-0, 6-4 as the No. 5 match ended before the Shockers earned victories at the other five singles slots.
Wichita State secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots. A 6-2 victory at the top position preceded a 6-3 win at the third slot. Jose Oscar Diaz and Daniel Lopez-Rey led 5-4 at No. 2 before play ended after Wichita State clinched the first point.
The Shockers won in straight sets during the No. 1, 2 and 6 singles matches, including a 6-2, 7-5 victory at the top slot to secure the dual.
Creighton claimed victories in the first frame at both the third and fourth singles positions. Armando Gandini earned a 6-4 win at No. 3 and Diaz won 7-6 (7) at No. 4. Wichita State responded with 6-2 wins in the second set at both spots before winning 6-2 in the third at No. 3 and sweeping a 10-point tiebreaker at No. 4.
"We had a few opportune mistakes in doubles, otherwise our play was solid there," head coach Tom Lilly said. "In singles, it was nice to see us leading at two through five at the start and through most of the first sets against a top-50 team.
"We will need to step it up a bit more against Marquette on Sunday."
Creighton will host the Golden Eagles on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
