Creighton defense provides the difference with 22 points off turnovers
OMAHA, Neb. --Â Powered by 22 points off turnovers and a late push in overtime from Ty-Shon Alexander, the Creighton men's basketball team defeated Providence 76-70 in overtime on Wednesday, March 6.
The victory, Creighton's fourth straight, moved the Bluejays to 17-13 on the season and into a five-way tie for third place at 8-9 in BIG EAST play. Providence fell to 16-14 overall and 6-11 in conference action.
Trailing 63-61 early in the overtime session, the Bluejays reclaimed control of the game with a 7-0 run. Martin Krampelj got things started with a pair from the charity stripe, but it was on the defensive end that Creighton earned the win. A stop of the Friars with just under three minutes remaining led to an open trey from the right wing by Alexander. The following trip turned the game as Alexander poked the ball from Friar Maliek White near mid-court then raced to the offensive end for his first dunk of the season to make it 68-63 with 2:00 left on the clock. Providence cut it to a three-point game (68-65), but Connor Cashaw grabbed an offensive rebound and his putback helped to seal the win.
From very early in the game Creighton set the tone on the defensive end, forcing eight Providence turnovers in the first half alone. Trailing 4-2 at the 16:19 mark of the first half, the Bluejays took control with a 13-5 run over the next six minutes. Davion Mintz leveled the game with a mid-range shot, then a trio of three-pointers from Marcus Zegarowski, Alexander and Kaleb Joseph pushed the Bluejays out to a 15-5 edge. The Friars clawed their way back within a point at 15-14 and again at 19-18, but Creighton responded to each Providence challenge in the first half. The two squads headed to the locker room with Creighton up 28-25.
With a clear emphasis to get the ball inside at halftime, Krampelj delivered all 15 of his points and 10 of his rebounds after halftime. While Krampelj went to work in the paint, the Bluejay defense forced seven more turnovers to race out to a 48-32 lead with just over 12 minutes left. Krampelj and Joseph each accounted for nine of Creighton's first 20 points in the frame to build their advantage.
Coming out of a timeout that saw Providence head coach Ed Cooley challenge his team, the Friars turned the tables with increased defensive intensity themselves. The Friars rallied back to knot the game at 59-59 on a three-point play by Isaiah Jackson with 14.1 seconds left. Creighton had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Davion Mintz's jumper from the middle of the lane rimmed out, forcing a fourth overtime game this season for CU.
Creighton had 17 points in the overtime, led by seven from Alexander, to win in the extra session for the first time in six overtime tries since a win over No. 3 Villanova last February.
Alexander led five Bluejays in double figures with 17 points. Krampelj closed the game with 15 and 10 rebounds, all after halftime, for his sixth double-double of the season. Joseph, Mintz and Zegarowski had 12, 11 and 10 points respectively. Creighton shot 42.2 percent overall, including 23.7 percent from downtown, and also drained 13-of-20 foul shots (65 percent).
Jackson paced PC with 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes off the bench, while Alpha Diallo had his second double-double of the year against CU with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Friars shot 45.2 percent from the field, made 4-of-20 three-pointers, and were 10-of-21 at the line.
Creighton closes out the regular season on Saturday, March 9 as the Bluejays host DePaul at 7:00 pm at CHI Health Center Omaha. Following the game seniors Connor Cashaw and Kaleb Joseph, plus three senior managers, will be honored on the home floor for the final time.
