Series History: Creighton leads Seton Hall, 14-6
The Pirates and Bluejays have developed a budding rivalry over the five years in BIG EAST battles. Creighton had gotten the best of
Seton Hall in each of the first four seasons, but the Pirates took the series last year 2-1. Neither team has recorded a sweep of the other, with Creighton going 4-2 in two trips to New Jersey. This weekend will be slightly different as renovations to the Pirates home field have moved the battle to Staten Island, the home of the Staten Island Yankees.
Scouting the Pirates
Seton Hall has been a bit up and down this season, opening the season 3-12 and now sitting at 16-17. The Pirates enter the
weekend series with the Bluejays on a modest two-game winning streak, started with a 7-3 road win over #19 TCU on Sunday, April 14.
The Pirates enter the week with a team batting average of .258, but four regulars are above .300. The quartet of Matt Toke (.309), Steve Grober (.306), Christian Del Castillo (.304) and Casey Dana (.301) lead Seton Hall at the dish. The four Pirates combine for 81 RBI, 15 HR and 23 doubles. The rest of the team have 24 doubles, three HR and 86 RBI.
On the mound Seton Hall has a 4.06 ERA. One of the bigger surprises has been the struggle of BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year Ricky DeVito. The righty has a 4.13 ERA and a 1-3 record in six starts (28.1 IP). Despite their struggles on mound, Seton Hall remains one of the favorites in BIG EAST play.
Bluejays Continue to Enjoy Free Baseball
With four extra-inning games already this season the Bluejays are a perfect 4-0. Going back to 2018, Creighton took the lone extra-inning contest, claiming the game on Feb. 25 at UC Davis.
The Bluejays also won the last two extra-inning affairs in 2017, giving Creighton seven consecutive wins during free baseball.
The last time the Bluejays lost in extra-innings was on April 7, 2017 to St. John's in 14 frames.
