Staten Island, N.Y. -- Guided by a pair of home runs from junior Will Robertson, delivering five RBI, the Creighton Baseball team posted an 11-1 win over Seton Hall on Friday, April 19th.
With the win the Bluejays captured the series as Creighton moved to 21-8 on the season and 4-1 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 16-19 overall and 2-3 in conference action.
The fun began for Creighton in the bottom of the first as starter Denson Hull retired the first two Pirates on just four pitches. The southpaw, however, needed a strikeout with the bases loaded to escape the frame unscathed.
Hull's emotional lift from the first led to a mammoth home run from junior Jason Allbery to left, his first of the season. The Bluejays continued to play long ball in the third, as junior Will Robertson blasted a two-run shot over the right field wall, plating fellow junior Isaac Collins to make it 3-0.
The score remained 3-0 until the fifth inning, when Creighton exploded for seven runs on five hits, a walk and a hit batter. Junior Jake Holton got things started with a single through the right side, following a sacrifice, a walk and a wild pitch, Allbery put down a sac bunt to push the Creighton edge to 4-0. A pair of RBI singles from freshman Jared Wegner and sophomore Will Hanafan give Creighton a 6-0 lead, then Collins doubled to right to make it 7-0. Finally Robertson capped the frame with a shot to right-center, his eighth of the season, as the Bluejays went up 10-0.
Seton Hall pushed across its lone run in the sixth on an RBI single from Matt Toke, yet Hull closed the frame with a fielder's choice. Hull went on to collect the win (3-3), his third in as many appearances, allowing one run on five hits and two walks in six innings. Pirate starter David Festa took the loss (2-2), surrendering three runs on six hits in three innings.
Creighton got its final run on an RBI single from freshman Andrew Meggs in the ninth.
Robertson, Collins and Wegner each closed the game with two hits, while Robertson's five RBI led Creighton.
The Bluejays and Pirates are scheduled to wrap up their three-game series on Saturday at 12:00 pm (CT), however significant rain is in the forecast.
