Series History: Creighton leads Seton Hall, 17-6
The Pirates and Bluejays have developed a budding rivalry over the five years in BIG EAST battles. Creighton got the best of
Seton Hall in each of the first four seasons, but the Pirates took the series last year 2-1. The Bluejays returned the favor this season with the first sweep by either team, taking three from the Pirates in Staten Island.
Creighton and Seton Hall have met five times in the BIG EAST Tournament, all going the Bluejays' way.
The Bluejays open the tournament with the Pirates for the fourth consecutive time as Creighton faced Seton Hall to open the BIG EAST Tournament in 2015, 2016, 2017 and again this season.
Scouting the Pirates
Seton Hall has been a wayward team in 2019 as renovations continue on its home field. As a result the Pirates have played many games at St. John's as well as the Creighton series in Staten Island.
The result is the Pirates may be more than comfortable on another road trip, this time in Ohio. Earlier this season Seton Hall was the lone team to take a BIG EAST series from Xavier, winning two of three in Cincinnati. The Pirates enter the tournament on a three-game slide, dropping all three meetings with St. John's last weekend. Seton Hall comes to Ohio with a team batting average of .249, but the duo of Tyler Shedler-McAvoy and Matt Toke have been sizzling in BIG EAST play. The tandem are hitting .386 and .343 respectively against conference foes.
On the mound Seton Hall has a 3.97 ERA. Creighton will battle BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year Ricky DeVito for the second time this season. The righty has a 3.86 ERA and a 2-5 record in 11 starts (58.1 IP). In BIG EAST play, however, DeVito has a 1-3 mark with a 4.78 ERA in 32.0 innings.
Bluejays Have Been Road Warriors
With an 21-5 road record this season, the Bluejays have the second most road wins in the NCAA. Creighton two game behind Bryant, with a 21 road wins, Bryant is 23-10 on the road this season. Â
The Bluejays' .808 road winning percentage is equally impressive, sitting third in the country. The only two teams better on the road this season are Stanford (15-3, .833) and UCLA (17-4, .810)
Baseball Climbs Into Rankings for D1Baseball & Baseball America at No. 25
Coming off a weekend sweep of Villanova to claim the outright BIG EAST Regular Season title, the Creighton Baseball team got a little national notoriety as the Bluejays checked in at No. 25 in both D1Baseball.com and Baseball America's final regular season poll. Creighton also earned No. 27 in the NCBWA Poll. Each poll was unveiled early on Monday, May 20.
The last time Creighton appeared in either the Baseball America or D1Baseball.com poll was on May 2, 2016, when the Bluejays checked in at No. 25 for Baseball America.
With a 35-11 overall record the Bluejays sit at No. 23 in the NCAA RPI.
