OMAHA, Neb. -- Four Creighton programs were recognized with Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for having multi-year Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.
Creighton's women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf and women's tennis teams earned the APR Public Recognition Award in the NCAA's latest rankings released Wednesday.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. Largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores, teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,328, up by 44 from the previous academic year. APRs for programs in the top 10% ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,214, marking an increase of 26 teams from last year. Of the teams recognized, 471 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 857 competed in women's sports.
This is the eighth straight honor for Creighton women's tennis, sixth straight for women's basketball and the fourth in a row for women's cross country. Each of those teams have been recognized 10 times overall. The women's golf team was honored for the seventh time, and third straight year.
"Congratulations to the programs earning Public Recognition Awards for their commitment to academic success," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "The number of perfect scores this year is an indication that schools and student-athletes are setting high bars for achievement, and we are proud that they are continuing to succeed academically as well as athletically."
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years. The BIG EAST Conference ranked third with 42.2 percent of its teams earning Public Recognition Awards.
A perfect score (or graduation rate) is represented by 1,000. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. Creighton had all 14 of its teams earn a multiyear APR score of 951 or better and in the 2017-18 academic year, 12 of CU's 14 programs had a perfect 1,000 score.
Creighton's student-athletes own a 3.45 cumulative GPA and tied a program record with a 3.46 GPA during the fall 2018 semester.
