Paul Kruse recorded three saves as Creighton played its second top-10 ACC opponent of the weekend
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Creighton men's soccer team ended its season-opening weekend trip to North Carolina with a 1-0 setback to No. 4 Wake Forest on Sunday night at Spry Stadium.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 0-1-1, while the Demon Deacons improved to 2-0-0.
Sunday's loss against the Demon Deacons came at the heels of Creighton's 2-2 double overtime draw at No. 6 North Carolina on Friday night.Â
Calvin Harris' goal during the 76th minute proved to be the game-winner for host Wake Forest.Â
Creighton goalkeeper Paul Kruse recorded three saves as Wake Forest held a 13-6 edge in shots.Â
The Bluejays did not record a shot on goal during their battle against the nationally ranked Demon Deacons.
Creighton had its best scoring chance during the 30th minute. Ziyad Fares found the end line and sent a pass to Luke Haakenson who shifted the ball through a defender's legs and into the back of the net, but the potential go-ahead goal was disallowed because the referee ruled that the ball went out of bounds past the end line.Â
After falling behind during the final 20 minutes of play, Creighton continued to fight for a game-tying goal and the Bluejays' fired a final shot with less than a minute to play, but Daniel Espeleta's effort went wide to the right of the goal.Â
Creighton returns to the pitch on Friday for a contest against defending national runner-up Akron as part of Creighton's 2019 Socctoberfest celebration. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Zips is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
