Late Surge Not Enough as Women's Soccer Falls to Florida Gulf Coast 2-1

Senior Ashley Cearlock Scores in 84th Minute
Fort Myers, Fla. -- Despite a strong surge in the final 10 minutes, the Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Sept. 20th. The loss dropped the Bluejays to 6-2-0 on the season, while the Eagles moved to 4-3-0.
The Eagles took an early lead, scoring in the 13th minute of play. The FGCU tally came off the foot of Evdokia Popadinova, taking a throw in from Syniah Clark and a one-touch pass from Marjorie Boilesen.
The match remained 1-0 into halftime, with the Eagles limiting Creighton to just two shots in the opening half.
Florida Gulf Coast pushed its advantage to 2-0 in the 65th minute on a goal from Louise Lillback from 15 yards in front of the goal. Lillback beat Bluejay goalkeeper Katie Sullivan to upper right portion of the net, with Popadinova and Megan Young collecting assists.
Senior Ashleigh Cearlock pulled the Bluejays within striking distance in the 84th minute, scoring with 83:48 showing on the clock. Cearlock bounced in a header from five yards, with sophomore Ansley Atkinson lofting the ball into the box.
Creighton had one recorded shot and two additional corners in the final five minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer in the loss.
The Bluejays were out shot 13-9 in the match, while Sullivan finished with five saves.
Creighton continues the weekend road trip to Florida on Sunday as the Bluejays face (RV) Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton at 5:00 pm (CT).
