Women's Cross Country Places Fifth; Men Take Eighth at National Catholic Invitational

Bluejays finish in upper half of a deep field
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Creighton women's cross country team placed fifth and the men took eighth place of 21 teams at the National Catholic Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind., on Friday afternoon.
Bluejay sophomore Danielle Hotalling led the Creighton women, finishing eighth among Division I runners with a time of 18:16.64 on the 5K Burke Golf Course. Her time was a 21-second improvement over a year ago, when she took 25th.
Freshman Jordan Harmon placed 24th in her second race as a Bluejay, clocking a time of 18:54.15. She finished sixth among all freshmen in the meet.
Just behind Harmon in 26th place with a 19:02.12 finish was Caroline Pass. The junior made a 54-second improvement over a year ago, when she finished 74th.
Rounding out the CU scorers were sophomore Marguerite Hendrickson (19:44.51) and senior Haley Fye (19:45.47) in 43rd and 44th place, respectively. Fye improved by 43 seconds over her 2018 time. Also competing for CU were Ashley Riley (49th; 19:55.03), Kate Cox (52nd; 20:02.61), Elizabeth Kettler (54th; 20:03.77) and Amy Leasure (70th; 20:30.88).
Leading the Bluejay men in his first collegiate race was freshman Jack Larsen. The Papillion native and Omaha Gross product finished in 41st place with a time of 27:18.56. Classmate Danny Bohnemann was close behind in 49th place after crossing the finish line in 27:27.80.
CU's third runner was Max Wehrle, who took 54th with a time of 27:38.09. Both marks were a significant improvement over the junior's showing in this race a year ago, when he took 162nd and finished 84 seconds slower.
John Quigley (63rd; 27:56.66) and Nick Monkemeyer (73rd; 28:41.86) accounted for CU's final team points. Also running but not factoring in the Bluejay team score were sophomores Bryce Shirley (100th; 29:42.84), Boston Small (105th; 29:51.68) and Aidan King (113th; 30:06.96).
Two other Bluejay men ran in an open race that also measured five miles. Freshman Micah Navarro took sixth of 52 participants with a time of 28:04.22 and fellow frosh Michael Buckley was 23rd with a 29:31.42 clocking.
Notre Dame won the team title on both the men's and women's side. The women's race was won by Notre Dame's Maddy Denner, who topped a field of 162 runners with a 24-second victory in a time of 17:21.12. The Fighting Irish also won the men's individual crown, as freshman Dylan Jacobs outpaced 163 runners with a nine-second cushion after finishing the five mile course in a time of 25:08.94.
The Bluejays return to the course at the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Classic on Oct. 5 in Lawrence, Kan.
