Heinrich and Love Deliver in 88th Minute to Give Creighton Women's Soccer a 1-0 Win over Iowa State

Late Challenge by Love Leads To Empty Net Goal for Heinrich
Omaha, Neb. -- In front of better than 1,200 fans, the Creighton women's soccer team was locked in a scoreless battle with under three minutes remaining in regulation. A late challenge from junior Juelle Love led to an empty net goal by freshman Skylar Heinrich as the Bluejays defeated Iowa State, 1-0, on Friday, Sept. 6 in the first match of Creighton's 8th Annual Socctoberfest.
The win pushed Creighton to 3-1-0 on the season, while Iowa State fell to 1-3-0.
The game-winning goal began with just over two minutes remaining in regulation as the Cyclones moved the ball deep in their own end from right to left. Defender Brook Miller sent a pass back to goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg. Love immediately charged to to challenge Iowa State's netminder, deflecting the ball to middle of the pitch, where Heinrich struck for the goal into the open net. The Cyclones last chance was a charge from defender Carly Langhurst, who came up two steps short.
Heinrich created dangerous chances throughout the match, closing with a team-high five shots. In the opening ten minutes of play, Heinrich beat two Iowa State defenders to create a breakaway against Schwichtenberg. Heinrich beat the Cyclone keeper to the right, but her touch was just to hard as she was unable to launch a shot.
For the match Creighton out shot Iowa State 17-10, including a 10-5 in the second half.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 8 as the Bluejays battle Eastern Michigan at 1:00 pm in Morrison Stadium.
