Omaha, Neb. – Freshman Skylar Heinrich equaled a school record with four goals to lift Creighton's women soccer to a 5-2 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Morrison Stadium.
With the win Creighton moves to 4-1-0 on the season, while Eastern Michigan drops to 1-3-1 overall.
Heinrich became the first freshman to complete a hat-trick since Brittney Neumann did so back in 2009 against South Dakota on Aug. 28, being the first do so in the a single half. She also became the first Bluejay to score four goals in a match since Krystle Campa touched the back of the net four times in a contest against Belmont on Oct. 15, 2000.
Eastern Michigan got on the scoreboard first in the 18th minute on a throw-in by Lindsey Shira that was slid into the box by Eagles' Parys Kerr, then one-touched by Sabrina McNeill past Bluejays' netminder Katie Sullivan to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later a pair of Creighton seniors knotted the score as Jaylin Bosak delivered a header off a corner kick from Cassie Legband.
Over the next 16 minutes, Heinrich delivered one of the most spectacular stretches in Bluejay women's soccer as the Omaha native struck four times. Senior Ashleigh Cearlock set Heinrich's first goal in motion shortly after in the 23rd minute with a shot that struck the crossbar, but Heinrich was right there to clean it up and snuck one past the Eagles goalie to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead.
Heinrich found the back of the net once again in the 24th minute, as she beat the Eastern Michigan defender for a one-on-one with Eastern Michigan's Mabel Dunn. Heinrich slid a shot to the right to extend the Bluejays lead to 3-1.
Eastern Michigan cut into Creighton's lead in the 28th minute off a shot from the top of the box from Lindsey Shira that was just out of the reach of Sullivan.
In the 32nd minute Heinrich completed the hat-trick as senior Taryn Jakubowski delivered a pass through the box to Heinrich which beat the goalkeeper to right and extended the Bluejays lead to 4-2.
Heinrich struck again in the 36th minute, as sophomore Ansley Atkinson played a ball through to the top right side of the box to senior Lauren Harkes, who slipped a pass through to the left post where Heinrich bested Dunn and struck for her fourth goal of the match.
The Bluejays tightened up their defense in the second half, holding the Eagles without any dangerous scoring chances at the net.
Creighton finished the match out shooting the Eagles 18-14, with 11 shots being put on goal. Sullivan helped secure the victory with five saves on the day, while redshirt-freshman Keelan Terrell got her action. Terrell played the final 20 minutes, nabbing two saves.
Creighton will return to the pitch next Sunday, Sept. 15, as the Bluejays welcome Oklahoma to Morrison Stadium at 1:00 pm.
