San Jose, Calif -- Two errors in the bottom of the first inning led to six unearned runs in Creighton Baseball's 8-4 loss to San Jose State on Saturday, Feb. 22nd.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 3-2 on the season, while the Spartans collected their first win to move to 1-5.
With two outs and a man at first, the Spartans got a double to left. Creighton starter Ryan Windham appeared to get out of the frame unscathed by inducing a ground ball to third. The ball, however was booted, sending San Jose State's first run home. Three hits and another error later the Bluejays trailed 6-0 entering the second.
Creighton got on the board with a pair of runs in the third, scoring on three singles, a walk and a sac fly. Sophomore Andrew Meggs opened the frame with a single to center, then senior Parker Upton drew a walk. Sophomore Jared Wegner laced an RBI single through the left side, then with one out in the frame junior Evan Spry lifted a sac fly to center to make it 6-2.
The score remained 6-2 until the bottom fo the sixth as Creighton allowed two more unearned runs. Reliever Jonah Smith recorded the rare four strikeouts in the frame, as one Spartan reached on a passed ball. The extra out led to both runs as the first two hitters singled off Bluejay hurler Paul Bergstrom.
Creighton answered with two runs in the eight on two walks, a single, a hit batter and a fielder's choice. Spry worked a walk to begin the inning. One out later junior catcher Garrett Gilbert slapped a single through the left side, then junior WIll Hanafan loaded the bags with another free pass. Freshman Cam Frederick was hit by a pitch to make it 8-3, then a fielder's choice by Meggs drove home the final run of the afternoon.
Windham took the loss (0-2), allowing six unearned runs on six hits in one inning. Spartan reliever Jonathan Clark moved to 1-1 on the year, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings out of the bullpen.
Creighton and San Jose State will complete the three game series on Sunday, Feb. 23rd at 2:00 pm (CT).
