Baseball Continues West Coast Swing, Heading to San Jose for the Weekend

Omaha, Neb. -- Looking to follow a series win in Seattle last weekend, the Creighton baseball team returns to the west coast as the Bluejays begin a three-game series with San Jose State on Friday at 8:00 pm (CT).

Scouting the Spartans (2020: 0-4, 0-0 WAC)
San Jose State opened the season suffering a four-game sweep against local rival Santa
Clara, dropping the first three games at home and the series finale at Santa Clara's home park.
San Jose State scored 10 runs over the four games, but allowed 40 runs.
The Spartans also committed six errors in the opening series, leading to eight
unearned runs.
While San Jose State had its share of bumps in the opening series, the pitching staff
displayed a strong ability to miss bats. The staff notched 35 strikeouts in four games, just under nine per contest.
Offensively the Spartans hit .198 as a team, but Ruben Ibarra went 5-for-12 (.417).
Scouting the Bluejays (2020: 2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays went out to the west coast last weekend, traveling to Seattle before coming home with a series win over the Redhawks.
Creighton did so in exciting fashion as the Bluejays scored two runs in the top of the ninth in the series finale to come home with the 5-4 win on Sunday.
The Bluejays opened the season with a strong performance from sophomore Dylan Tebrake as the right hander limited Seattle to one hit over five innings. Tebrake went on to claim his first win of the season as the Bluejays posted a 7-0 win in the opening game Friday afternoon.
Offensively the Bluejays enter the second week with three regulars hitting at least .400. Junior Evan Spry leads the way for Creighton at .444 (4-for-9) over two games, while senior Ryan Mantle as well as
sophomore Jared Wegner each went 4-for-10 in three games last weekend.
Walking Down Easy Street
The season opening win over Seattle saw the Bluejays work 10 free passes from Redhawk pitchers, while Creighton hurlers did not allow a walk.
During the Bluejays' sixth inning Creighton collected four runs on bases loaded walks alone.
The last time a Creighton team earned 10 walks in a game was last season against St. John's in a 17-13 win during the BIG EAST Tournament.
During the series in Seattle Creighton drew 20 walks. Last years squad walked 21 times in the first three game, while the 2018 team did so 19 times.
Earning it the Hard Way
While Creighton walked to first often in the opener, the series finale saw the Bluejays collect free passes of another variety. Seven times Creighton hitters trotted down to first base after being plunked in the Bluejays' 5-4 win at Seattle on Feb. 16th.
The seven hit batters is believed to be a Bluejay record, it has not happened since at least 1998.
During that span the Bluejays have been hit six times in a game on six different occasions. The last time being on April 8, 2017 vs. St. John's.
Another interesting fact from the Sunday game was only David Vilches was hit twice, five other Bluejays were plunked once.
