Baseball Falls 6-4 in Series Opener at UNLV

Las Vegas, Nev. -- The Creighton baseball team fell to 3-4 on the season as the Bluejays dropped Friday's series opening game with UNLV on Feb. 28th.With the win the Rebels moved to 2-7 in 2020.
Making his third start of 2020, sophomore Dylan Tebrake allowed his first runs of the season in the opening inning as UNLV turned a pair of doubles and an RBI single into a 2-0 lead in the opening frame.
Creighton answered back in the second, scoring a run on four walks in the frame, capped by an RBI free pass to freshman Cam Frederick.
Defensive miscues hurt the Bluejays in the sixth as the Rebels plated four unearned runs on three hits and two errors.
Down 6-1 in the top of the seventh, Creighton responded quickly with three runs on two hits, a walk and a hit batter. Frederick was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then junior Will Hanafan lifted an RBI double to right-center. One out later senior Parker Upton laced an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-3. Junior David Vilches drew a walk, to force UNLV to make a pitching change.
Senior Ryan Mantle greeted the new Rebel hurler Haydn King by reaching on an error to load the bags. Junior DH Garret Gilbert delivered an RBI fielder's choice to bring Creighton within two at 6-4, but King ended the Bluejay threat.
The Bluejays went down in order in the final two frame, giving King his first save of the season.
UNLV starter, Ryan Hare, picked up the win (1-1) as he limited Creighton to one run on four hits in five innings. Hare walked four and struck out seven.
Tebrake took the loss (2-1), allowing six runs (two earned) on eight hits over 5.2 innings of work.
Creighton and UNLV continue the three-game set on Saturday, Feb. 29th at 4:00 pm.
