Baseball Suffers 12-3 Loss in Rubber Game of UNLV Series

Las Vegas, Nev. -- The Creighton Baseball team suffered a 12-3 loss in the rubber game of the series at UNLV on Sunday, March 1st.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 4-5 on the season, while UNLV climbed to 3-8 on the season.
UNLV jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second, collected four runs on four hits. The Rebels jumped on Creighton starter Ben Dotzler in the frame, belting a leadoff single then a two-run home run from Austin Kryszczuk. A walk, a double and a single pushed UNLV's edge to 4-0, sending Dotzler to an early exit.
Creighton got on the board in the fifth via a leadoff triple from catcher David Vilches and an RBI double from junior Garrett Gilbert.
The bottom of the frame, however, saw UNLV respond with four runs on three hits. Rebel designated hitter Chris Dunn provided the offense with a three-run homer to center.
Bluejay senior Ryan Mantle provided a pair of Creighton highlights in the final three frames, blasting solo home runs in the seventh and the ninth innings.
Dotzler took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in one inning. UNLV starter Josh Sharman collected the win (1-1), limited the Bluejays to two runs on six hits and a walk in 7.1 innings.
The Bluejays return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 4th as Creighton plays its first midweek game of the season at Kansas. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
