Minneapolis, Minn. -- Trailing 5-2 entering the top of the ninth, the Creighton baseball team had the bases loaded with one down in a 5-4 game before a line drive double play left a sour taste in the Bluejays' mouths.
The loss dropped Creighton to 5-10 on the season, while Minnesota moved to 8-10.
The ninth inning began with consecutive walks to juniors Garrett Gilbert, Cole Albers and Will Hanafan. Minnesota responded by calling Patrick Fredrickson out of the bullpen. Freshman Jack Grace greeted Fredrickson with an RBI single, followed by a sac fly off the bat of Ryan Mantle to bring the game to 5-4.
Minnesota chose to intentionally walk junior David Vilches, prompting Creighton head coach Ed Servais to go to his bench for pinch hitter Evan Spry. The junior reserve lined a ball up the middle, but right into the glove of Gopher shortstop Drew Stahl, who beat Jack Grace to the bag at second to bring the game to a close.
Creighton ace sophomore Dylan Tebrake took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits int 2.2 innings. Minnesota starter Nolan Burchill picked up the win (2-2), allowing two runs on four hits and two walks in five innings, while Fredrickson collected his first save by recording the final three outs.
The Bluejays opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run by freshman Alan Roden in his first start at Creighton.
Minnesota used three consecutive two-out singles in the third to tie the game and chase Tebrake. The Gophers then took a 3-1 edge on an RBI knock from Jack Wassel and an error in the outfield.
Creighton inched closer in the fifth with a one-out double from Gilbert and an RBI single by Hanafan to make it 3-2.
The sixth inning saw the Gophers extend their lead to 5-2, scoring a pair of runs on two singles and two walks. The inning started with a single by Sam Ireland, followed by a walk to Andrew Wilhite. Chase Stanke sacrificed the runners to second and third, then an RBI grounder made it 4-2. Minnesota's final tally came via an RBI single from Stahl.
Vilches led Creighton's offense with a 2-for-4 day, while Gilbert went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Creighton returns home to begin a two-game series with Northern Colorado on Friday, March 13 at 6:00 pm.
