Upton Launches Fourth Inning Blast to Highlight Victory
Omaha, Neb. -- For Bluejay baseball, it is good to be home! The Creighton baseball team opened its home schedule with a 6-1 victory over Portland on Saturday, March 7th.
The win lifted Creighton to 5-6 on the season, while Portland dropped its third straight game during its Nebraska trip to fall to 11-4.
The Pilots scratched the scoreboard first with a solo home run off the bat of Tracye Tammaro over the right field wall. The Bluejay deficit was short lived as the Bluejays pulled even in the second. Senior Ryan Mantle opened the second with a double to left, junior Garrett Gilbert sent him to third with a sacrifice. After freshman Cam Frederick was hit by a pitch, junior Nick Gile laced an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1.
The Creighton offense continued to bang away in the third as the Bluejays plated three runs on four hits. Sophomore Andrew Meggs got things going with a single through the right side. After Meggs stole second, senior Parker Upton worked a walk, then junior David Vilches loaded the bags with a bunt single. Two outs later Frederick laced a two-run single to right, followed by an RBI knock to center by Gile.
In the fourth Upton gave Creighton even more breathing room with a two-run blast to make it 6-1.
Bluejay ace Dylan Tebrake moved to 3-1 on the season with the win, limiting Portland to one run on three hits and three walks in six innings. Senior John Sakowski tossed three innings of shutout ball to earn his second save of the season. Portland starter, Caleb Franzen, fell to 2-1 as he surrendered six runs on nine hits over seven frames.
The Bluejays' bottom of the order did the damage as Frederick and Gile, the seven and eight hitters, combined to go 5-for-7 with four RBI.
Creighton continues to play later today as Bluejays continue its split doubleheader against UNO. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm.
