Men's Tennis Knocks Off Xavier, 5-2, To Open Spring Break Stay In Florida

Bluejays claimed pair of three-set single victories
Creighton improved to 4-5 overall this season, while the Musketeers moved their season record to 5-10.
The Bluejays earned the first point of the match by winning the final two doubles matches. After falling in the No. 3 match, Creighton responded with wins at the top two positions. Nick Campbell and Mac Mease combined for a 6-4 win at the No. 1 slot, while Joe Hoff and Stratton Brown clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Creighton won four of the six singles matches to clinch the dual.
Hoff and Daniel Lopez-Rey extended Creighton's edge to 3-0 with straight-sets wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Xavier closed the gap with a three-set win at No. 2, but Jose Oscar Diaz sealed the match with a three-set win at No. 3. Diaz fell 7-5 in the first set before winning 6-3 in the second and 6-2 in the deciding third set. Mac Mease also earned a come-from-behind three-set victory. Mease lost 7-6 (2) in the first set but won in a tiebreaker, 7-4, in the second. During the deciding set, Mease claimed a 6-3 victory in the No. 4 match.
"We are proud of the way the guys competed today," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Coach Chalstrom and I stressed how important being mentally strong against a tough Xavier team was, and we were able to do that. We will rest up tonight and be ready for another battle against Georgetown."
The Bluejays and Hoyas will matchup at the USTA National Campus on Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. Central.
