Lauren Jensen has big fourth quarter in home debut
Omaha, Neb. -- A 14-2 run to open the fourth quarter helped the Creighton women's basketball team pick up its first win of the season, a 71-51 victory over Omaha on Saturday, Nov. 13 at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Creighton moved to 1-1 on the season with the win, while Omaha fell to 0-2. The victory was Creighton's 15th straight in the series as the Bluejays took a lead in the series (16-15) for the first time.
A slow opening frame saw the Bluejays scratch the scoreboard on an inbounds pass to sophomore Jayme Horan with 5:16 remaining in the opening fame. Horan's basket ignited a 14-2 run to end the first quarter, giving the Bluejays 14-6 lead at the close of the first quarter. The Bluejays did not trail again, though the game remained close into the fourth.
The second quarter saw the Mavericks close within three at 15-12 (7:39), drawing a response from the Bluejays as Creighton pushed its edge out to double-digits at 28-16 (1:55), taking a 28-21 lead into the half. Sophomore Molly Mogensen guided her squad in the second with four point, two assists and three steals.
Creighton held Omaha at bay throughout the third leading by 10 at 35-25 (7:19), but a late Maverick run took the contest into the final ten minutes with the Bluejays holding a slim 43-39 advantage.
The Bluejays opened the fourth quarter with a 14-2 flurry as junior Carly Bachelor and sophomore Lauren Jensen each scored six points to help the Bluejays break free of their crosstown rival. Jensen delivered 10 points in the first 6:30 of the fourth quarter as the lead stretched to 66-45.
Jensen had a game-high 16 points and Bachelor finished with 13 to lead Creighton, while Mogensen contributed eight assists.
UNO got a team-high nine points from Alexis Pratt, while Mariah Murdie closed the game with six points and nine rebounds.
Creighton is back in action on Wednesday with a 7:00 pm game at Nebraska. The Bluejays will be seeking their 12th straight win against an in-state school, and sixth in a row overall against the Huskers.
