CU ranks 20th nationally at 97 percent
OMAHA, Neb. - Nine Creighton University teams posted perfect Graduation Success Rates and all 14 Bluejay programs performed at 91 percent or higher according to figures released by the NCAA.
The GSR data shows the percentage of student-athletes receiving athletics aid and earning a degree within six years of entering college. The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation provides a more accurate appraisal of student-athlete success. The 2021 GSR numbers are based on freshmen who matriculated in 2014 and transfers who matriculated between 2011 and 2014.
The federal graduation rate remains the only measure to compare student-athletes with the general student body. Using this measure, student-athletes nationwide graduate at the same rate as the student body – 68 percent.
Creighton turned in a perfect GSR score of 100 percent in volleyball, women's tennis, women's soccer, women's golf, rowing, women's basketball, men's tennis, men's golf and men's cross country. It's the 17th straight year with a perfect GSR score for men's golf, women's golf, women's tennis and women's basketball, and the sixth straight reporting period that men's tennis has earned a perfect score.
Nationally, 89 percent of student-athletes who started college in 2014 earned degrees. That figure is 11 percent better than just 11 years ago and far better than the 74 percent mark when GSR tracking started in 2002.
"Academic accomplishment is of the utmost importance to BIG EAST schools, and we're very proud that our student-athletes continue to achieve at the highest level in the classroom," said BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman. "We applaud the faculty members, academic professionals and administrators on all of our campuses for their efforts in helping our student-athletes win the ultimate prize:Â a college degree."Â
The BIG EAST ranks third among all 32 D-I conferences with an overall Graduation Success Rate of 95 percent and a Federal Graduation Rate of 78 percent. All 11 BIG EAST schools achieved an overall GSR of 91 percent or better.
Creighton had an overall GSR score of 97 percent, which was tied for 20th-best nationally. Creighton is one of 21 schools with a GSR score of 95 percent or better in each of the last nine cycles, joining Belmont, Brown, Bucknell, Colgate, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Davidson, Duke, Gonzaga, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Loyola (Md.), Northwestern, Notre Dame, Pennsylvania, Princeton, Stanford and Yale.
