Jake Ronneberg found the back of the net during the 105th minute for the game winner
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Creighton sophomore Jake Ronneberg converted the golden goal in the 105th minute of the second overtime as the Creighton men's soccer team started the 2021 spring season with a 2-1 BIG EAST victory over Marquette on Saturday evening inside the Valley Fields dome in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The Bluejays moved to 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 3-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 during BIG EAST action.
Friday's match marked Creighton's first competition since a loss on Nov. 9, 2019 to Butler in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.Â
Both of the Bluejays' goal came following corner kicks. During the 105th minute Diego Gutierrez played a short service from the corner and made a move on a defender before sending the ball towards the six-yard box. Duncan McGuire swung over the ball to make his opponent bite before the ball found the foot of Ronneberg for his first career goal as a Bluejay.
Creighton opened the scoring during the 51st minute. Charles Auguste slotted the ball into the back of the net after a centering pass from Owen O'Malley following a couple of short passes off a corner kick.Â
Marquette tied the match at 1-1 with a goal from Lukas Sunesson in the 65th minute.
The Bluejays ended the match with an 18-9 edge in shots, including 9-4 on goal.Â
Freshman Nathan Schnur recorded two saves and tallied the goalkeeping victory during his first start as a Bluejay.
Creighton's starting XI featured six players making their first start in a Bluejay uniform and a total of eight players made their Creighton debuts.
Creighton returns to the pitch for an exhibition match against two-time defending NAIA national champion Central Methodist on Wednesday. The Bluejays and Eagles will meet inside the Omaha Sports Complex at 3 p.m.
