Women's Basketball Wins at Nationally-Ranked DePaul For Third Straight Year

Bluejays move over .500 in BIG EAST
CHICAGO, Ill. -- Led by 27 points from freshman Emma Ronsiek and 18 from senior Temi Carda, the Creighton women's basketball team won its third straight road game on Saturday, Feb. 20, with an 83-72 win at No. 19 DePaul.
Creighton improved to 7-8 with the victory and is 6-5 in BIG EAST action. DePaul dropped to 13-5 (10-3 BIG EAST). Each of DePaul's first four losses have come to teams currently ranked in the top-five nationally.
Down 11-4 at the opening media timeout (4:42), head coach Jim Flanery urged his team to make strong passes and be shot ready. His message found his mark as Ronsiek connected from long range, then junior Payton Brotzki knocked down a mid-range jumper on the first two possessions. The two buckets ignited a 21-7 run for the Bluejays that saw six different players contribute to give Creighton a 25-18 at the break.
The opening bucket of the second quarter came in the post from Ronsiek, but DePaul responded with eight straight. Clinging to a 27-26 edge, the Bluejays refused to bend to the will of their ranked opponent. Instead Creighton used four layups, four free-throws and a three-ball from to push its lead back out to nine at 42-33 with 10 seconds left.
DePaul drained a triple in the closing seconds of the half, but Creighton held a 42-36 edge as the two teams went back to the locker room.
Early in the second half the Bluejays continue to get high percentage shots, converting layup after layup to hold a 54-45 lead with 4:49 left. Coming out of a media timeout, Carda drilled a three-pointer to push the Bluejays' lead into double-figures for the first times (57-45).
The opening minutes of the final frame saw DePaul find its range from distance to make it a five-point contest (63-58 with 8:32 left). Creighton's youth stepped forward to reclaim control of the game with a 10-2 run. Sophomore Carly Bachelor got things started with a driving layup, then Ronsiek delivered five of her game-high 27 in a span of 42 seconds. Freshman Morgan Maly capped things off with a trey of her own, putting the Bluejays up 73-60 (5:53).
Down the stretch the Bluejays extended the lead to as much as 17 (83-66) and went on to collect the its seventh win of the season.
This was the third consecutive season that Creighton has won on the road against a nationally-ranked DePaul team, something no visiting squad had done since Notre Dame from 2008-10.
Ronsiek had 14 of her game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter and Carda added 18 in the game as part of a group effort that saw five Bluejays score in double-figures. Carly Bachelor scored a season-best 13 points, while Payton Brotzki (11) and Morgan Maly (10) also scored in double-figures.
Creighton shot 58 percent for the game and 53.3 percent (8-15) from three-point range. CU also converted 17-of-18 free throw attempts (94.4 percent) and won the rebound battle 41-27. DePaul shot 38.2 percent for the game (29-76) and 21.4 percent (6-28) from three-point range.
The victory was Creighton's 10th over a top-25 team under Jim Flanery, and sixth in the past four seasons.
Creighton returns to the court on Monday at 6 p.m. when it visits Marquette.
