Jays win 20 games, again.
NEW YORK, N. Y. -- A 9-0 run down the stretch helped second-seeded and 17th-ranked Creighton beat third-seeded Connecticut, 59-56, on Friday night at Madison Square Garden in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
With the win, Creighton advances to Saturday's 5:30 p.m. Central final vs. eighth-seeded Georgetown in a game that will be televised nationally on FOX. The two teams split a pair of regular-season meetings this year, with the road team winning both times.
The Bluejays fell behind 13-2 in the first five minutes as UConn big man Adama Sanogo scored eight points and the Jays missed 9-of-10 shots to start the contest, only to rally with a 7-0 run to get back into the game. Creighton tied the game for the first time at 19-all on a rare basket in the paint from sharpshooter Mitch Ballock. The Bluejays went ahead for the first time with just over two minutes left in the half on a trey by Marcus Zegarowski to make it 25-24. That triggered an 8-0 run to put CU up 30-24, and helped the Bluejays take a 30-26 lead into the half.
Christian Bishop led CU with eight points while Damien Jefferson added seven points and a team-best six rebounds before the break. UConn was led by Sanogo's eight points in seven minutes after the All-Freshman Team rep picked up his second foul with 8:47 left in the first half. UConn was 0-for-5 in the first half from deep and lost the rebound battle to Creighton, 23-14.
Back on the floor to start the second half, Sanogo scored three points as part of a 6-2 run to tie the game at 32. Five points from Sixth Man Award recipient Tyler Polley gave UConn a 48-43 lead, but the Jays answered to tie the score before a three-point play by James Bouknight put UConn ahead 51-48. Bouknight then made two more foul shots with 5:44 left to put the Huskies ahead 53-48. CU answered with a Zegarowski hoop before a tying three-pointer from Jefferson at the 3:58 mark from the top of the key.
CU then took a 55-53 lead on a hoop inside by Bishop and were ahead 57-53 with 2:36 left on a pull-up jumper by Zegarowski.
Bouknight was fouled with 30.8 left and made both to trim CU's lead to one and the Huskies would foul Ballock with 20.4 left. The Bluejay senior sank both free throws, passing Bob Gibson in the process for 22nd on Creighton's all-time scoring list, to give CU a 59-56 lead with 20.4 left.
The Huskies had three tries in the final 15 seconds but came up empty as Creighton survived to advance to its third final in eight seasons since joining the league after coming up empty in the title tilt in 2014 and 2017.
UConn was led by 13 points each from Whaley and Sanogo, while Bouknight finished with 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting. The Huskies shot 32.8 percent for the game (19-58), including 21.4 percent from deep (3-14) and made 15-of-19 free throws.
Jefferson led Creighton with 14 points and tied his career-high with 12 rebounds while Zegarowski added 13 points. Bishop was also in double-figures with 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Creighton won the rebound battle 50-33 and grabbed 17 offensive boards. The Jays won despite shooting 37.1 percent from the field.
NOTES: Creighton has made a three-pointer in 909 straight games, and in 280 games in a row before halftime ... Creighton - 59, UConn - 56
Q. UConn came in here with a lot of, like, they've been playing really well. And I think a lot of people probably thought they were the favorites at least to win this league based on how the season ended for everybody. Did you guys take that stuff to heart at all? Were you guys playing for more than just a chance to go to tomorrow night? Was this pride on the line a little bit tonight?
DAMIEN JEFFERSON: Oh, yeah, for sure. We have a group chat with us and the coaches, and they were sending us tweets, who was going to win the Big East championship and everyone was saying it was going to be UConn. We took pride towards that and everybody said that just added fuel to the fire. And I think we came out there played like fuel -- used it as fuel, I should say.
Q. What was it like to have to overcome that early deficit, the 13-2 and have to play at UConn's pace and be able to overcome that in the process?
DAMIEN JEFFERSON: It was nothing we haven't seen before. We've been facing games like that all year. It was nothing new to us. We just had to stay composed and do what we had to do and play the right way, which is play our style of basketball, don't get too sped up or too slowed down. Obviously we did what we had to do, we fought and we came out with the W.
Q. To be able to say that -- because there were questions just asked about that deficit, you really just kind of just went back and forth, back and forth. How were you able to shut down UConn's bigs and guard play defensively?
DAMIEN JEFFERSON: Coach kept preaching we can't go back and forth with them. Like you said, we can't keep going back and forth with them. And he told us if we get a couple of stops we're going to win this game. And I was just telling everybody in the huddle, keep fighting, keep fighting, get some stops on the defensive end.
And, man, I'm proud of my guys. We did a great job stopping those dudes like you said stopping their bigs and keeping their guards to a good pace where we wanted to be at. I feel like we did a good job.
Q. I want to affirm, UConn, you talked about, wanted to shut down the notion as favorites. I picked you before the tournament started, let me add that. But UConn started off hot, 13-2 start. They went for a first-round knockout right there. How were you guys able to just collect yourselves get back up from that knockout punch and come back the way you did?
DAMIEN JEFFERSON: We know that basketball is a game of runs. They had some good runs; we had some good runs. But it came down to key stops. I feel like we did a great job of stopping their main guy, James Bouknight. And we kept him to the pace we wanted him to be at and we did a good job with that and obviously came out with the win.
Q. Your team has the opportunity tomorrow to play for a Big East title. I know you're coming off this emotional win right now, but what are you guys looking forward to tomorrow night going up against Georgetown?
DAMIEN JEFFERSON: Just taking it one game at a time. We have to play Georgetown just like how we approach every game and that's play the Creighton way play, the right way, and obviously get some stops. And we know we go into the game we have to guard their bigs, contain their bigs and their guards.
They've got nice guards with Blair and the freshman, Harris. We've got to contain him and do what we can with Wahab. We know he's a force in faint. Once we do that, we're going to be good.

COACH MCDERMOTT: Just a gritty win by our team. People talk about our offense and how good our offense is. And it's just really hard to play offense against a team coached by Danny Hurley. They do such a good job of taking away your initial action. It's very hard to get things in transition because they're so disciplined.
And then they meet you at the rim on any penetration. So we had to win the game in other ways tonight. And that was on the defensive end and then on the backboards. So for us to outrebound a UConn team by 17 I think speaks to the grit and toughness that I have in that locker room as well.
Q. I know Bouknight got 40 on you in the first match-up, but seemed like Denzel started to figure out maybe how to guard him a little bit at the end of that first game. What did you see tonight in terms of how that carried over because it didn't seem like Bouknight was able to get into a rhythm at all?
COACH MCDERMOTT: Obviously we had never seen him to that point. They hadn't played a lot of games if you remember. They were just coming out of a shut-down at that time. So there wasn't a ton of film.
And you're right, Denzel did a great job the last four minutes of regulation and in overtime. Even though he had a huge game, he the a good job at that stage of the game. We made sure we showed him a few more bodies tonight, that he was seeing a numbers as he was turning the corner.
And when Denzel got in foul trouble, you've got to tip your hat to Damien Jefferson. He hasn't practice one rep guarding him and we flipped him over there because we wanted that size and length. And D.J. did a good job, especially the last possession. I think they were trying to get a quick two. D.J. cut off the driving lane, made them take a tough three, then we were fortunate they missed a couple of 3s on those tip-outs.
Q. You laid it out that you knew what kind of game it would be against UConn. But I wonder when you're in the middle of it especially when they jump out to a big lead, do you have to get after your guys a little bit to remind them how tough it's going to be in an atmosphere like that or do they know?
COACH MCDERMOTT: It was one of the first TV timeouts, I remember D.J. saying, everybody just calm down, everybody just calm down. And it's exactly what I was about to say. But obviously the meaning it has coming out of one of your leaders and captain's mouths, has a impact.
They were forcing us to speed up because of their pressure, and we weren't creating any open driving lanes. We were standing on top of each other. Once we settled into their physicality and pressure we got back to playing a little more like we could play.
We didn't shoot it great and obviously UConn has a lot to do with that. But this is a hard team to play against. And all three games scoring is tough to come by, so you have to figure out other ways to win.
Q. We've talked about D.J. a lot throughout the year. But this is kind of the first time he's ever really played on a stage like this with kind of this much at stake. What impressed you so much about what he was able to do tonight and in that moment where he's the voice that the guys are listening to as opposed to (indiscernible)?
COACH MCDERMOTT: I think what impressed me the most is he stuck with himself. He got us to a great start. But then he had some turnovers to start the second half, missed some threes, missed some shots at the rim, missed a couple of free throws. But he stuck with himself and he hits a big three at 53-50 to tie the game. And that's the sign of a guy who gets it and understands who he is. You ask me what I like about him. Everything. He's developed into such a complete player and what he does on the floor is just -- I mean, it's only a small part of what he brings to our program. What he does in that locker room and what he means to his teammates, it's high level. So he's a warrior. I think I've said it before, I don't think we're going to realize exactly what he brings to us until he's not here anymore, because he does all the little stuff so well that you sometimes take it for granted. But when you watch it on film again, see what he does, how he goes about it, you realize he's a heck of a special player.
Q. You were down by five with five minutes left, Greg. I think maybe went to a 9-0 run, was there anything in particular you saw during that stretch that allowed you guys to flip the momentum there?
COACH MCDERMOTT: D.J. hit the big 3, and then we tried to get a slip with Christian. And they defended it. But we were still able to get it to them on the post. We like the matchup with Whaley there. Christian had had some success at UConn in that second half inside as well.
So Christian was patient. They weren't going to leave the shooters. He just made a nice shot. Faked and ducked under it and got a big basket. But it was the defensive end that got us back in it. And a guy like Alex O'Connell plays ten minutes, gets eight rebounds. Was flying around. Shereef getting hit in the head, having to sit out. We needed to have people step up with the foul trouble we were in and Ryan Kalkbrenner gave us good minutes.
And just really proud of our team. This is a high quality team we beat tonight. And we're excited to play for a Big East championship tomorrow.
