Volleyball Sweeps Butler, Improves to 7-2

Bluejays now 4-1 in BIG EAST play
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The No. 23 Creighton Volleyball team swept Butler on Friday to open its first and only BIG EAST road series of the season. Scores of the match in favor of Creighton were 25-16, 25-17, 25-16.
Creighton improved to 7-2 on the year and is 4-1 in BIG EAST action. Butler is now 4-7 and 1-4 in BIG EAST play.
Creighton had little trouble with the Bulldogs in the first set, bolting to a 16-8 lead of an eventual 25-16 victory. Jaela Zimmerman had seven kills and hit .778 to lead a Bluejay attack that hit .360 as a team.
The Bluejays took control early in the second set to take a 13-8 lead after an ace by freshman Kiara Reinhardt. The Bulldogs battled back to get within one but after a CU timeout the visitors regained control with a 5-1 run. Creighton would win the game by a 25-17 score, with a kill from Annika Welty clinching the set. CU held Butler to .057 hitting in the second set.
Creighton hit .500 in the final set with 17 kills in 30 swings, with Welty hammering home seven kills in seven swings.
Zimmerman led CU with 13 kills and Welty had a career-high 10 kills on .571 hitting. Reinhardt served up a pair of aces and Ellie Bolton had a team-best 14 digs. Creighton hit .367 for the match and had 44 kills, three aces, 49 digs and four blocks.
Butler, which upset No. 24 Marquette last weekend, was paced by 10 kills from Melody Davidson. Caroline Cleveland led BU with eight digs and Funmi Oladapo with four blocks. The Bulldogs had 29 kills, two aces, 30 digs and 5.0 blocks.
The Bluejays and Bulldogs will meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m. Central at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
