Cross Country Teams Make Progress at BIG EAST Championships

Both squads end season with strong showings in North Carolina
CARY, N.C. -- The Creighton women's and men's cross country teams closed their abbreviated 2020-21 season on Friday at the BIG EAST Championships. The Bluejay women placed seventh while the men's took eighth at WakeMed Park in Cary, N.C.
Running in just their second, but final, meet of the spring, the Bluejays started fast.
"We went out hard," said head coach Chris Gannon. "Without much racing over the past year, we decided to go out fast and get the opportunity to race some high caliber competition. Coach Fayers and I expect that the BIG EAST will see at least two national qualifying teams on each side and potentially three."
Chase Howard, in particular, put together a dynamic start. He was running in fifth place with the lead pack after 2,100 meters of the 8K race. The redshirt senior would end up in 48th place with a final time of 24:58.6. Howard was second among Bluejay finishers, trailing only junior teammate John Quigley. The Omaha product came in 44th place with a time of 24:52.1, one spot better than last season.
Marcos Gonzalez made an impact in his first league championship. crossing the finish line in 25:37.7 to take 64th place. He finished one spot and 4.2 seconds in front of fellow freshman Jack Larsen. Sophomore Danny Bohnemann came in 72nd place with a time of 25:59.0 to round out the contingent that contributed to CU's eighth place showing in the 10-team race that featured 94 entrants.
While recordbook will note that Creighton's eighth-place showing is identical to last season, the Bluejays did beat one more opponent than 2019 due to the league's addition of traditional power UConn. Butler won the men's race with 35 points with three of the top five finishers individually, but Villanova's Haftu Strintzos won the men's race with a time of 23:05.2 to beat BU's Barry Keane by 0.8 seconds.
Like their male counterparts, the Creighton women repeated their finish from 2019 despite the addition of UConn. The Bluejays placed seventh of 11 teams in the first race of the morning after edging out Xavier by one point. The women's race featured 93 competitors.
As she's done for all 14 races of her career, the Creighton women were paced by junior Danielle Hotalling. The Blue Springs, Mo., product took 29th in the 6K race with a time of 21:46.4. Classmate Marguerite Hendrickson earned a 35th place finish with a time of 21:55.0.
Morgan Koca's second meet in a Bluejay uniform was one to remember as the freshman took 46th after finishing in a time of 22:21.6.
Also contributing to CU's team score were senior Katie Fukushima in 61st place (22:58.4) and sophomore Ashley Riley in 68th (23:13.9).
Georgetown teammates Sami Corman (20:27.0) and Maggie Donahue (20:28.1) finished atop the women's race to help the Hoyas win the team title with 46 points, two better than UConn.
"We have a young program and racing hard today will make us better the next time we race," said Gannon.
