Milwaukee, Wis. -- Junior Ansley Atkinson delivered the game-winning goal in the 92nd minutes, finding the back of the net from just beyond the top of the box to give the Creighton women's soccer team a 2-1 win in overtime at Marquette on Thursday, April 1.
The win was Creighton's third consecutive victory, moving the Bluejays to 3-4-0 on the season and 3-3-0 in BIG EAST action, while Marquette fell to 5-4-0 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play.
Playing at Marquette's indoor facility (Valley Fields), the two teams each started slowly, with the first shot of the match coming in the 18th minute.
A defensive lapse in the 35th minute that saw two Bluejay defenders take each other down, gave the Golden Eagles an open look at the net. Marquette's Katrina Wetherell made the most of the opportunity by sliding a goal off the crossbar into the net for the unassisted tally at 34:24.
Creighton responded quickly as the Bluejays drew a foul in the 38th minute (37:05), sophomore Aida Kardovic converted her second penalty kick of the season to knot the game at 1-1.
The second half saw the Bluejays become the aggressor, out shooting Marquette 8-3 in the frame. The Golden Eagles were able to fend off Creighton in regulation, forcing extra time.
The overtime period lasted just 62 seconds as Kardovic found Atkinson in space at the top of the box. The junior midfielder turned and fired the game-winning goal past Marquette's Mikki Easter for the win.
Today was a very scrappy game at times, but I thought we did well to control the game with the ball to create some dangerous opportunities," said Creighton head coach Ross Paule. "After Marquette scored, I didn't see any panic, we stuck to the game plan. We knew by continuing to move the ball and looking to get our dangerous players in good spaces, we would score a goal. The overall mentality to fight back and get a goal in the first half was huge."
The Bluejays' three-match win streak in BIG EAST action is the first time under Paule that Creighton has won three consecutive conference contests. The last time Creighton claimed three straight conference wins in one season goes back to 2010 in the MVC, with victories at Northern Iowa (3-2 on Oct. 2), Evansville (3-0 on Oct. 9) and Drake (1-0 on Oct. 14).
Creighton returns to Morrison Stadium on Sunday, April 4 as the Bluejays host DePaul at 1:00 pm.
