Creighton Outscores Wildcats 27-2 Over the Weekend
Omaha, Neb. -- For the third consecutive game the Creighton Baseball team posted a decisive win over Villanova, collecting an 8-0 on Sunday, April 11 to sweep the weekend. The Bluejays outscored the Wildcats 27-2 during the three-game set.
Creighton moved to 9-7 on the season and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 12-5 overall and 0-3 in conference action.
Just as the Bluejays had done in the first two games, Creighton put a crooked number on the board early to take control. On Sunday the Bluejays plated three runs in the first inning, then two more in the second and third frames. The Bluejays opening inning started with two down as sophomore Sterling Hayes reached on an infield single, freshman Alan Roden walked and senior Ryan Mantle was hit by a pitch. Facing a 2-2 count, senior Parker Upton blasted a three-run double into right center.
The Bluejays' second inning was setup by a leadoff infield single from sophomore Jared Wegner and a one-out walk to junior David Webel. Sophomore Andrew Meggs drove home Wegner with a single to right, but Webel was cut down racing to third. Hayes followed with an RBI double to left, giving Creighton a 5-0 lead.
In the third inning a one-out walk to Upton set the stage for senior Dax Roper's two-home homer to right, bouncing out off the top of the wall.
The Bluejays final tally of the game came in the fourth on an RBI single to center from Mantle.
On the mound a quartet of Creighton hurlers limited Villanova to three hits and one walk. Freshman starter Cade Lommel collected the win (2-1) with four innings of two-hit ball. Meanwhile Villanova starer Tyler Arella took the loss (1-1), allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks.
Hays and Meggs led the offense with five combined hits, three for Hayes and two for Meggs.
The Bluejays return to the diamond on Friday, April 16 as Creighton hosts Connecticut in a four-game series beginning at 6:00 pm on FS2.
