Indianapolis, Ind. -- Although the Creighton women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Butler, it will be a happy flight home as the Bluejays clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday, April 8.
The loss closed Creighton's regular season at 4-5 overall and 4-4 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs moved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in conference action.
Creighton clinched second place in the Midwest Division shortly after the conclusion of its match with a Marquette win over Xavier. The result in Cincinnati sends Creighton to the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since the Bluejays joined the conference in 2013. The last time Creighton reached a conference tournament was in 2012 as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.
In Thursday's action at Butler, Creighton fell behind 1-0 in the 12th minute. The Bluejay back line faltered on a clear, allowing Bulldog Anja Savich to strike from just outside the box for a goal on a crossing shot from right to left.
Butler held the 1-0 edge into the 72nd minute, when sophomore Lea Høiness gathered her own blocked shot to find junior Ansley Atkinson for the equalizer. Atkinson's goal crossed from left to right, finding the lower corner of the net.
Moments later Atkinson had another opportunity, firing from 20 yards away on a free kick. Her shot beat the Butler wall, yet was denied by the crossbar.
Finally in the 81st minute Butler took the lead for good as Savich delivered her second goal of the match. This time the BIG EAST scoring leader connected from inside the box moving right to left.
Creighton and Butler are both advancing to the BIG EAST Championship on Friday, April 16. The Bluejays will take on the top seed from the East, Georgetown, while Butler's opponent has not yet been determined.
