Creighton Takes Opener 11-10, Completes Sweep with 8-2 Win
Creighton moved to 19-9 on the season and 11-2 in BIG EAST action with a pair of wins on Saturday. Butler, meanwhile, fell to 10-19 overall and 4-9 in conference play.
Game 1: Creighton 11, Butler 10 (7-innings)
Creighton scratched the scoreboard as early as possible in the opening game as senior Parker Upton connected for a leadoff home run in the first.
Butler answered with three runs in the second, but Creighton wasted little time with its response. The Bluejays plated four runs in on an RBI single by freshman Alan Roden, an RBI single from senior Ryan Mantle and a two-run blast by senior Dax Roper.
Mantle pushed the Bluejay lead to 6-3 with his second RBI single in the fifth, then Creighton put five runs on the board in the sixth to take an 11-3 lead. The five run sixth saw sophomore Sterling Hayes blast an RBI double, a third RBI single from Mantle and Roper connected on his second two-run home run of the game.
After chasing Creighton starter Dylan Tebrake in the sixth, Butler took advantage of some wildness to plate six runs in the frame to make it an 11-9 contest.
Bluejay closer John Sakowski gave up a solo home run in the seventh, but nailed down his fourth save of the season. Tebrake moved to 7-0 with the win, limiting Butler to four runs on five hits in five innings.
Butler starter Nick Easton took the loss (1-2), allowing five runs on six hits in four innings.
Game 2: Creighton 8, Butler 2
Roden and senior starter Jonah Smith shined in the night cap. Roden gave his hurler a 1-0 lead in the first, driving in Upton with an RBI single through the right side.
The offense plated a pair in the second, getting RBI single from junior Garrett Gilbert and an unearned run on a Bulldog throwing error.
Roden blasted a solo home run in the third, then Upton and Roden each connected on two-run blasts in the fourth.
Smith took matters into his own hands by cutting down the tying run at the plate in the bottom half of the first. Smith went on to limit Butler to one run on four hits in seven innings for the win (6-2). Reliever Tommy Steier allowed one run in two innings out of the bullpen to close things out.
Three Bluejays finished the doubleheader with a pair of home runs as Upton blasted one in each game, while Roper hit two in the opener and Roden launched two in the second game.
Roden finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 (.714) with five RBI, two walks and two stolen bases to lead the Bluejays.
