Nembhard's Heroics Carry Canada To Semifinals at FIBA U19 World Cup

Canada and US could meet in semifinals on Saturday

RIGA, LATVIA – Incoming Creighton freshman Ryan Nembhard once again starred when his team needed it most to help Canada improve to 5-0 at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup following a come-from-behind 81-77 win vs. Spain on Friday afternoon in Riga, Latvia.
The start of Nembhard's game was anything but ideal, as he picked up two fouls in the first 3:18 and was forced to the bench. His third personal came with 4:27 to go in the second quarter, relegating the Canadian floor leader to the bench for the rest of the half. Spain led 39-37 at intermission and 59-58 after three quarters as Nembhard had 0 points and 1 assist to that point.
Nembhard finally entered the scoring column with 3:33 to play and Canada clinging to a narrow 71-66 lead. After Spain drew within three points, Nembhard drove left but made an off-balance right-handed lay-up with 1:54 remaining to put Canada up 75-70. Spain countered with a three-pointer before Nembhard calmly made a pair of free throws with 1:26 to go to put Canada up 77-73. Canada would trim the deficit to 79-77 before Nembhard iced the game with two more foul shots to wrap the game's scoring.
Michigan-bound Caleb Houstan scored 25 points for Canada, and Purdue big man Zach Edey registered 24 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Nembhard finished with eight points, but all of them were among Canada's final 10. He also contributed five assists, four rebounds and a steal in 31 minutes of work.
Through half of the eight games scheduled for Friday in Latvia, Nembhard continues to rank among the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup leaders in a multitude of statistical categories. His 6.2 assists per game paces the tournament, and his 81.3 percent marksmanship at the free throw line ranks fourth. He's tied for seventh in double-doubles (1), 12th in three-point percentage (.400), 14th in minutes per game (28.5) and 15th in points per contest (13.4 ppg.).

Canada will face the winner of Friday's game between the United States (4-0) and Senegal (2-2). The United States team includes Nembhard's Creighton teammate, Ryan Kalkbrenner.
