Men's Basketball Falls at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Creighton men's basketball team fell to Nebraska 71-50 on Sunday afternoon at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb.

The loss drops the Bluejays to 5-4 on the year while the Cornhuskers remained unbeaten, picking up their 13thconsecutive victory to improve to 9-0. With Nebraska's victory on Sunday, the Cornhuskers have now won back-to-back meeting with the Bluejays for the first time since 1995-97.Â

Rienk Mast led all scorers with 20 points, while Sam Hoiberg (15) and Pryce Sandfort (13) each scored in double-figures. Nebraska finished the contest shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from three-point range, while outrebounding the Jays 39-35.Â

Creighton got a career-high 16 points and a season-high five rebounds from Austin Swartz as the Jays shot a season-low 30.8 percent from the field and just 24.2 percent from the three-point land.

A slow start for both teams quickly turned in the favor of the Cornhuskers as Nebraska embarked on a 13-0 run take a 15-2 lead eight minutes into the contest. CU looked for a spark on the offensive end from the bench and used a three from Isaac Traudt and a pull-up jumper from Swartz to pull within eight at 15-7. Five straight points from Nik Graves cut the deficit to six at 20-14 with 4:56 remaining in the first half, but the Cornhuskers answered with an 11-3 burst to take a 33-19 advantage into the break.Â
CU struggled to find their footing in the opening period, shooting a season-low 18.8 percent from the field in the first half. Graves led the way with seven points, while Nebraska got eight points from Jamarques Lawrence before half. Â

Nebraska extended their lead with an 8-0 run that including three-pointers from Mast and Hoiberg to seize a 45-22 edge. NU's lead grew to as much as 27 at 71-44 late in the game on a layup from Cale Jacobsen before claiming the victory..Â
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. when it hosts Kansas State in a contest that will be televised on FOX and can be heard on 1620 The Zone.
