Creighton opens regular-season on Friday vs. Kansas City
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball won the final two sets to rally and defeat Iowa State in five sets (3-2) to close exhibition play on Friday inside D.J. Sokol Arena. Scores of the match in favor of CU were 22-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 15-8.
The match featured 18 ties and four lead changes.
Per agreement between the sides, full stats will not be released from the match. The programs had agreed before the match to play at least four sets no matter what to allow as many players and line-ups as possible to be utilized in preparation for the regular-season.
Following the match, Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth was pleased with the teaching opportunity the exhibition presented, and how it will benefit her team as it preps for the regular-season. "So many good things happened. We played some tight games. We were up, and then almost choked it away. We had to battle back. All those are things you want to create. It's so good to get a fifth game opportunity. For what we want out of an exhibition, it really fulfilled all that for us."
Booth also praised the environment inside D.J. Sokol Arena, including the pep band, dance team and crowd, which returned after limited attendance during the spring due to COVID-19. "I forgot how loud it could get in here. We weren't totally at capacity, but we were pretty full...I think the great thing about tonight is that everyone played and got an opportunity to work through their nerves. Even the sophomores have never played in this environment, so all of them needed to feel what this is like and I'm glad they got this opportunity.
Creighton opens its regular-season on Friday with matches at the Mizzou Invitational against Kansas City (10 a.m.) and Saint Louis (5 p.m.) before facing tournament host Missouri on Saturday at 3 p.m.
