Scouting South Dakota (1-1-1)
It has been an interesting start to the 2021 season for the Coyotes, spanning the spectrum of results. South Dakota's season began with a cancellation of its home opener with UTRGV due to travel issues. The Coyotes delivered a 1-0 win in double overtime at home against Northern State (Aug. 21), then battled Colorado State to a 0-0 final (Aug. 26) and dropped a 2-1 decision at Wyoming (Aug. 29).
South Dakota's defense has kept them in each match this season, allowing just two goals in better than 300 minutes on the pitch (306:03). Goalkeeping duties have been split with Caroline Lewis playing two matches (196:03) and Emma Harkleroad seeing action in one contest (110:00).
Scouting Creighton (3-1-0)
Following a disappointing result at Tulsa on Aug. 26, the Bluejays showed great resolve with a dominant 3-0 win at Oral Roberts on Sunday (Aug. 29). The effort against the Golden Eagles was the best all-around match of the season for Creighton. Â
Over four contests Creighton has out shot its opponents 81-34 and holds a 25-13 edge on corners.
Defensively Keelan Terrell posted her third career shutout in the win over Oral Roberts. Terrell has notched 11 saves and is second in the BIG EAST with a 0.47 goals against average on the season.
Offensively the Bluejays are getting contributions from multiple sources. Sophomore Jordy Rothwell delivered a pair of goals on corners in the win at Oral Roberts, while junior Ansley Atkinson server three assists.
Both Atkinson and Rothwell are tied with freshman Abigail Santana with four points to lead Creighton, but three other Bluejays have at least two with goals from junior Cristina Garriga as well as freshmen Alyssa Judkins and Hailey Rothwell.
Atkinson's Hat Trick at Oral Roberts
Junior Ansley Atkinson notched an assist on each of Creighton's three goals in the Bluejays' 3-0 win at Oral Roberts on Sunday, August 29. Atkinson's first two assists came on corners lofted to sophomore Jordy Rothwell, while her third was served in front of freshman Alyssa Judkins less than ten feet ahead of the net. Judkins one touched the ball past Oral Roberts' goalkeeper Louisa Ramsauer.
Atkinson's three assists marked the first time since 2009 a Bluejay player delivered three helpers in one match. The last time it happened was by Mary Zapapas against Southern Utah on Oct. 18, 2009 in a 7-0 win.
Victory Over the Golden Eagles First of Five Against Summit League
Creighton's 3-0 win over Oral Roberts was the first of five consecutive matches against teams from the Summit League. The Bluejays will host South Dakota (Sept. 2), South Dakota State (Sept. 5) and North Dakota State (Sept. 9) before closing out the quartet at Kansas City on Sept. 12.
