Scouting Kansas City (2-5-0)
Playing their fourth home match of the season, the Roos are 1-2-0 in three contests in Kansas City in the early season. One common opponent the Roos and Bluejays faced in the early season was Tulsa. Both Creighton and Kansas City battled Tulsa in road contests with the Bluejays falling 1-0 (Aug. 26) and the Roos dropping a 5-1 battle on Sunday, September 5th.
Kansas City's offense has been guided by Kassi Ginther in 2021, she has four of the Roos' eight goals this season. Four other players enter the matchup with Creighton with one goal, including Rileigh Kuhns (second on the team with one goal and two assists).
The Roos defense has surrendered 18 goals this season, allowing at least one tally in each match. A pair of netminders have split time in goal for Kansas City this season as Mackenzie Caldwell has started three matches (282:47) and Natasha Richardson has started four contests (360:00). Caldwell has collected 27 saves, but is 0-3-0 on the season, while Richardson has a 2.25 goals against average (GAA) with a 2-2-0 mark and 18 saves.
Scouting Creighton (5-1-1)
The Bluejays' calling card throughout the non-conference season has been defense. Over the last three games Creighton has allowed a total of eight shots to South Dakota, South Dakota State and North Dakota State. Overall the Bluejays enter the road match at Kansas City on a four-match scoreless streak.
Defensively Keelan Terrell posted her sixth career shutout and fourth consecutive against North Dakota State. Terrell lowered her season GAA to just 0.27, with a streak of 383 minutes (383:20) of scoreless soccer. She took over as the leader in the BIG EAST Conference this week with a GAA of 0.27.
On offense sophomore Abigail Santana and senior Ansley Atkinson are leading the way for the Bluejays. Santana has posted a pair of multi-goal matches and another her fifth against the Bison to lead Creighton with ten points, while Atkinson has seven assists in as many matches.
Terrell Enters Match with the Roos With Scoreless Streak Approaching 400 minutes
Junior goalkeeper Keelan Terrell enters Sunday's match with Kansas City on a scoreless streak of better than 383 minutes (383:20). The last time a Bluejay goalkeeper posted at least three consecutive scoreless matches was Erin Scott (current assistant coach at Marquette) in 2015 from Sept. 13 to Sept. 20.
The Bluejay record for a scoreless streak is held by Alicia Montgomery during the 2009 season at 392:23.
Bluejay Defense Approaching Creighton Milestone
Just as Terrell has a scoreless streak approaching 400 minutes, so to does the Creighton defense as a unit. The record for a Creighton scoreless streak is over 612 minutes (612:15) stretching from the final two matches of 2008 into the opening five contests of 2009. One of the opposing goalkeepers within that five match stretch was current Creighton
assistant coach Daniella Pappas (in net for South Dakota State on Aug. 23, 2009).
Another Record in Reach for the Defenders
Twice in Creighton history the Bluejays have posted five consecutive shutouts, the last beginning on Nov. 5, 2008 in a 0-0 draw with Missouri State and concluding against Kansas City in a 3-0 win on Aug. 30, 2009.
The only time a team has posted five straight shutouts in a single-season was in 1990 as the Bluejays blanked Wright State (3-0 on Sept. 15), Denver (1-0 on Sept. 16), Benedictine (10-0 on Sept. 18), Tarkio (4-0 on Sept. 19) and Missouri Valley (8-0 on Sept. 23).
