Kansas City, Mo. -- Powered by a series of high moments, the Creighton women's soccer team posted a 3-0 win at Kansas City on Sunday, September 12.
The Bluejays' fifth consecutive shutout moved Creighton to 6-1-1 on the season, while Kansas City fell to 2-6-0.
Less than three minutes into the contest the Bluejays took an early lead as sophomore Abigail Santana delivered her sixth goal of the season. Santana took a centering pass from senior Ansley Atkinson approximately 25 yards from the net. Santana crossed the field from right to left, then fired a shot into the left corner to put the Bluejays up 1-0.
Creighton controlled the first half, limiting Kansas City to just one shot in the frame.
In the second half it was the Roos that returned more aggressive. In the 62nd minute of play the Roos sent a blistering shot toward Bluejay goalkeeper Keelan Terrell. Having already set the Creighton record for consecutive scoreless minutes in the opening half, Terrell got a hand on the ball to push it off the crossbar. The ball came directly down just outside the line, fooling the public address announcer as the music played in the stadium. Despite the inadvertent music, Terrell continued play.
Later in the second half she made another diving save to the right to keep the Bluejays up 1-0 in the 63rd minute.
Finally in the 75th and 88th minutes senior Cristina Garriga put the game away with goals. Garriga's first goal came on a header, pushing in a ball served to her just beyond the penalty kick dot by Santana. The third goal of the match came on a corner as Atkinson sent a ball to Garriga, she turned an fired from 15 yards for her third goal of the season.
The two assists for Atkinson gave her nine in 2021, placing her in a five-way tie for the fourth most in a single season. The assist record for one season is 12, held by Jessica Powers (1998) and Kristine Willrett (1995). She also climbed into a three-way tie for sixth in a career, recording her 17th and 18th as a Bluejay. Atkinson is tied with Anne Eveler (1989-92) and Emily Orbell (2007-10).
Terrell closed out the match as the first Bluejay to record five consecutive shutouts and will enter the next match at Iowa State on Thursday, Sept. 16 with a scoreless streak of over 473 minutes (473:20).
