Women's Basketball Punishes Pirates; Improves to 6-1 in BIG EAST

Creighton never trails in 11th win of the season
Omaha, Neb. -- Sophomore Emma Ronsiek scored 19 of her game-high 27 points in the first half as the Creighton women's basketball team delivered a lopsided 83-60 win over Seton Hall on Friday, Jan. 14, at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The win moved the Bluejays to 11-4 on the season and 6-1 in BIG EAST play, while dropping the visiting Pirates to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
Both teams were hot from the start, leading to a 10-10 with 5:42 remaining in the first quarter. The Bluejays took control with a 14-0 run led by the Creighton bench. Sophomores Mallory Brake and Molly Mogensen combined for 10 of the 14 as Creighton shot 12-of-15 (80%) from the field in the opening frame, getting 11 layups to take a 26-12 edge into the second.
Creighton continued to move the ball, finding open shots in the paint in the second. The Bluejays racked up 36 points in the paint in the opening frame. Seton Hall stayed close by getting to the free throw line nine times (8-of-9) in the second quarter. The difference was Ronsiek, who made 8-of-11 shots in the first half to post 19 points in 14 minutes as the Bluejays bolted to a 49-34 advantage.
The lead stretched to 70-39 late in the third quarter (2:08) behind a trio of trifectas by sophomore Lauren Jensen. The Pirates forced Creighton into nine turnovers over the final 12 minutes, but crawled no closer than 20 points in the final quarter.
Ronsiek finished 12-of-16 from the field and scored a season-best 27 points in just 24 minutes of playing time to pace Creighton. Also in double-figures were Jensen (14), senior Payton Brotzki (12) and Mogensen (10). The Bluejays dished out a season-high 28 assists on 35 field goals, with Tatum Rembao delivering 11 helpers.
Seton Hall got 13 points from Curtessia Dean and 10 from Katie Armstrong in the loss.
The Bluejays are back in action on Sunday when they host St. John's (5-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) at 1:00 pm in Omaha.
