Villanova, Pa. -- The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 74-64 setback at Villanova on Sunday, January 23.
The loss moved Creighton to 14-5 on the season and 9-2 in BIG EAST action, while Villanova climbed to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Down 23-13 with 8:00 remaining in the second quarter, the Bluejays seized control with a 21-3 run over the next 6:29 to take a 34-26 advantage (1:31). Sophomore Morgan Maly got things going with a traditional three-point play, then sophomore Emma Ronsiek sandwiched layups around a trey by senior Rachael Saunders to knot the game at 23-23 (5:06). A free-throw from senior Tatum Rembao, followed by a trifecta from Ronsiek made it 27-23 (4:00).
Following a Wildcat trey, Creighton rattled off seven straight on a pair of free throws from Maly, a three-ball from sophomore Lauren Jensen and layup from Ronsiek.
Creighton's second quarter run was keyed by the Bluejays' ability to post Ronsiek and Maly, but the flow of the game in the second half kept the Jays off balance.
Over the final 20 minutes Creighton was whistled for 15 fouls, sending Villanova got to the free-throw line 21 times in the second half. Creighton, meanwhile, made three trips to the charity strip in the third and fourth quarters and drew just five fouls.
Ronsiek closed the game with a team-high 16 points, while Rembao and Maly had 11 and 10 respectively.
Wildcat Maddy Siegist exploited the advantage, closing the game with 31 points and 12 rebounds to lead all scorers. Villanova's Brianna Herlihy and Lior Garzon finished with 17 and 15 points in the contest.
