Bluejays Upend #19 Xavier with 2-1 Victory, Advancing to the BIG EAST Championship Semifinals

Cincinnati, Ohio -- Junior Duncan McGuire continued to pace the Creighton men's soccer offense as the Omaha native delivered the game-winning goal in Creighton's 2-1 win over No. 19 Xavier in the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday, November 5!
The victory lifted Creighton to 7-4-6 on the season, while Xavier fell to 9-2-7. The six seed in the BIG EAST Championship, Creighton moves on to face No. 2 Seton Hall on Thursday, November 10 at 3:00 p.m. (CT).
The Bluejays struck first in the battle against Xavier, earning a penalty kick in the 35th minute (34:29). Head coach Johnny Torres went to sophomore Giorgio Probo and the Iowa Western CC transfer delivered for his third goal of the season.
Each squad fired off four shots in the opening frame, but Creighton took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
The offensive intensity raised significantly in the second half as the Musketeers fired off nine shots in the final 45 minutes. One such shot found its mark in the 64th minute (63:56) as Bernal de la Garza connected for his fourth goal of the season to knot the match at 1-1.
Creighton wasted little time reclaiming the lead as senior Dominic Briggs centered a ball to McGuire. The Omaha native spun quickly towards the Xavier goal and launched his team and BIG EAST leading 14th goal into the back of the net in the 66th minute (65:30).
The Bluejays frustrated Xavier the rest of the way as senior goalkeeper Paul Kruse recorded six saves to secure the win.
