Queens, N.Y. -- Playing the seventh road game in the first eight games of the season, the 13th ranked Creighton Women's Basketball team fell to St. John's 66-62 on Sunday, December 4.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 7-1 on the season and 2-1 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's climbed to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in BIG EAST contests.
The Bluejays bounced out two an early 8-2 lead behind three-pointers from juniors Lauren Jensen (Lakeville Minn.) and Morgan Maly (Crete, Neb.). The Red Storm, however, tightened their defense to prevent another Creighton trey in the opening half.
Not only was the three-ball not falling (0-for-8 after the first two minutes), Creighton shot 10-of-36 in the first 20 minutes. Creighton's struggles led to increased confidence from the Red Storm as St. John's went 4-of-7 (57.1) from beyond the arc in the first half to take a 39-26 edge into the locker room.
Jensen began to take over in the third quarter scoring eight points in the frame to bring the Bluejays withing seven at 51-44.
Creighton's comeback continued throughout the final ten minutes, culminating in a 61-59 game with 30.8 seconds remaining. Following a defensive stand the Bluejays had possession, allowing head Jim Flanery to call a timeout and design a play.
Jensen's number was called, allowing her to create coming off a screen. The Creighton guard drove the lane and came up just short on jump shot.
St. John's hit five of six free throws down the stretch to ice the contest.
Jensen led all scorers with 21 points, while Maly finished with 15. St. John's got 20 points from Jayla Everett, and 13 each from Kadaja Bailey and Unique Drake. Rayven Peeples also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Creighton returns home to prepare to play Drake on Saturday, December 10 in D.J. Sokol Arena. The game is slated for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
