Softball Opens 2022 with 6-2 Win Over Idaho State

El Paso, Texas - The Creighton softball team kicked off the 2022 season with a 6-2 win over Idaho State as both teams began play in the UTEP Tournament on Friday, February 11.
Creighton returns to action later this evening as the Bluejays face tournament host UTEP at 8:00 pm (CT).
A couple of throwing errors in the opening frame cost Creighton as Idaho State seized a 1-0 in the top of the first. Creighton responded in the second as junior Sam Alm worked a four-pitch walk, followed by a pair of RBI triples off the bats of sophomore Alyssa Gappa and junior Kiara Mills. Before the frame closed Creighton added a third run as graduate transfer Shayna Dahlen delivered an RBI sac bunt to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.Â
Creighton tacked on run in the third behind a pair of singles by sophomore Cayla Nielsen and junior Kailey Wilson as well as an RBI hit by pitch from Gappa.
The Bluejays final two runs came in the fourth, courtesy of consecutive RBI singles by Alm and Mills.
Creighton starting pitcher Mikayla Santa Cruz went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits in seven innings. The junior notched six strikeouts, allowing three walks to move to 1-0.
Idaho State starter Emma Montoya took the loss (0-1), allowing three runs on four hits and a walk in two innings.
Creighton closed the game with 10 hits, getting three from leadoff hitter Brittney Manthie.
