El Paso, Texas – The Creighton softball team suffered a 7-4 setback in the UTEP Invitational to the host UTEP on Friday evening.
The Bluejays fall to 1-1 on the year, while the Miners improved to 3-1 overall.
UTEP opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to deep center field to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Miners then exploded for six runs on seven hits in the third inning to extend their lead out to 7-0.
Kiara Mills got Creighton on the board in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field, the Bluejays first home run of the season, making the score 7-1.
Creighton added three more runs in the fifth, cutting the deficit down to 7-4. Junior Brittney Manthie reached on an infield single and sophomore Carly Nielsen doubled down the left field line before junior Sam Alm launched a three-run home run over the left field wall.
Creighton would only get one base runner the rest of the way as the Mines claimed the 7-4 win.

Creighton will return to the Helen of Troy Softball Complex for two games on Saturday. The Bluejays will take on Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. (CT) before a rematch with UTEP at 5 p.m. (CT).
