Women's Basketball Sets School and BIG EAST Record with 22 Treys
Omaha, Neb. -- The splash zone in D.J. Sokol Arena was plentiful as the Creighton women's basketball team hit a school and BIG EAST record 22 three-pointers in the Bluejays' 96-49 win over Butler on Sunday, February 13.
The win pushed Creighton's record to 18-7 overall and 13-4 in BIG EAST play, while Butler fell to 1-21 on the season and 0-13 in conference action.
Facing Butler's zone defense the Bluejays were shot ready from the start, knocking down nine from long range in the first quarter (9-of-14, 64%). Eight of Creighton's first 10 field goal came from beyond the arc, led by three from sophomore Lauren Jensen, as the Bluejays raced out to a 28-10 lead with 2:08 remaining in the quarter. Jensen closed the frame with her fourth trifecta of the period, sending the game to the second with Creighton holding a 33-15 edge.
Despite slowing down from the field (5-of-16, 31%) in the second quarter, the Bluejays extended their lead to as much as 23 points (45-22) with 2:43 remaining. At the break, Creighton held a 47-27 advantage.
Creighton returned to its sharp shooting in the third, hitting 9-of-13 from long range (69%). The Bluejays' first nine made field goals of the third quarter came beyond the arc. The long range markswomanship pushed Creighton out to a lead of 78-40 as the game moved to the final frame. During the third quarter the Bluejays set the Creighton record for three-pointers in a game with 2:53 remaining on a trey from senior Rachael Saunders, Creighton's 19th of the contest. Moments later the Bluejays' claimed the BIG EAST mark with their 20th trifecta from junior Carly Bachelor.
The Bluejays' largest lead of the game (49 points) was set with the 22nd trey of the game giving Creighton a 96-47 edge with 2:05 left.
Jensen led all scorers with 23 points, while Emma Ronsiek (19) and Morgan Maly (18) also closed the game in double figures. Seven of the Bluejays eight active players found the bottom of the net from downtown.
Butler got 14 points from Kendall Wingler, including four treys herself, to lead the Bulldogs. Celena Taborn and Emilia Sexton also posted double-digits with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, February 18 in an early game at St. John's, set to tip at 12:00 pm (CT).
