Bluejays Falter in Milwaukee, Downed by Marquette 50-47

Milwaukee, Wis. -- An untimhely scoring drought proved the undoing of the Creighton women's basketball team as the Bluejays fell to Marquette, 50-47, on Sunday, February 6.
The loss moved Creighton to 16-7 on the season and 11-4 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette climbed to 17-5 overall and 10-3 in conference action.
Defense was the story of the game as Creighton held a 14-8 lead after one period and went into halftime holding a 23-18 edge.
Down 8-5 in the opening frame, the Bluejays closed the first quarter with a 9-0 run, getting buckets from four different players to head to the second up 14-8.
Knotted at 14-14 with just over five minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Morgan Maly knocked down a contested three to push the Bluejays back in front. Downt he stretch sophomore Molly Mogensen delivered a pair of driving baskets, helping to send Creighton to the locker room up 23-18.
Midway through the third quarter Maly scored seven straight Bluejay points as the two teams battled back-and-forth to send the game to the fourth with a 36-30 lead.
The final frame seemed to turn Creighton's way with under four minutes remaining as sophomore Lauren Jensen get a defensive stop on a loose ball turnover. On the other end senior Rachael Saunders converted a three-ball to give the Bluejays a 45-40 edge with 3:27 left. The two teams traded buckets as Creighton held a 47-42 advantage with 2:50 remaining. Maly's bucket, however, was Creighton's last points as the Golden Eagles scored the final eight points.
Maly led the Bluejays with 14 points, while Rachael Saunders delivered eight points and seven rebounds.
Marquette got a game-high 20 points from Liza Karlen and 13 points from Lauren Van Kleunen.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Friday, February 11 as the Bluejays host Xavier at 6:30 pm.
